The Holy Mountain

4.1/5
113 reviews

When it comes to national treasures, Mt Athos is right up there with the Acropolis in Athens. Halkidiki's easternmost peninsula is the world's one and only monastic republic, ruled over by the black-robed monks of its medieval monasteries. As such access to it is restricted, with all women – and female animals except cats – forbidden to set foot on its shores.

All of which makes this cruise the best – and only – way to see it. Sit back and soak up the sun as your boat sails along the peninsula, giving you close-up views over the monasteries, which are literally perched on the cliffs. It's a fascinating glimpse into the monks' secret world.

And you can't miss the actual Mt Athos, or Holy Mountain, rising up just over 2,000 metres from the peninsula's southern tip – it's a pretty inspiring sight. Later, your boat will arrive at Ouranopoli, where you'll have time for lunch before sailing home.

Trip was too long as I and many people were exhausted. The food and bar obviously capitulated on this long ride. No proper access on exiting the coach as too many other coaches had congratulated, some elderly folk were asked to go down on a rough embankment endangering themselves. On the return journey there was absolute mayhem as scores of people cold not find their return coach.our coach was about 20 mins late thus adding to further stress. excursion not fully explained by Nikos !!!

There were no problems, everything ran smoothly and we really enjoyed the day. The coach was ready and on time for both outward and return journeys. Views of the Athos Mountains and Monasteries were excellent from the boat. We could have done with some extra time at the Port.

The cruise was as expected, tho again communications during pickup were mixed. It was unclear what trip the coach was for, despite names on a digital list. Fortunately, being fluent in Greek, I clarified the situation for fellow, mainly German-speaking tourists (who despite excellent English) had some problems understanding drivers. There was also some confusion with photographers on board (were the photos free or paid for) the patter sounding a bit suspicious. Ouranopolis was disappointing.
