What can you do in Tenerife?

Tenerife isn't a place to admire from afar – it's an island to immerse yourself in. From the volcanic landscapes of Teide National Park to hidden villages and boat trips along the coast, every experience is about discovering places and moments that stay with you.

Spot whales off the south coast, uncover the places locals love, or head out on a day trip that takes you beyond the usual tourist highlights. It's the perfect way to make the most of your time on the island and experience the real Tenerife.

Want to get to know the island before you travel? In our Tenerife travel guide, our local Service Support Representative shares her insider tips, from the places you shouldn't miss to the ones you can happily skip.

The seven best activities and excursions in Tenerife:

1. Explore Teide National Park

Most people come for the summit – the highest peak in Spain – but the real spectacle lies in the landscape that surrounds it. Vast lava fields, striking rock formations and viewpoints that offer a different perspective at every turn. Visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon to experience the park at its very best.

2. Make a splash at Siam Park

Fancy something a bit more adventurous? This is the place to be. From adrenaline-pumping slides like the Tower of Power to more relaxing spots such as Mai Thai River and Siam Beach, you can set your own pace. Arrive early to avoid the queues, or plan a few quieter moments between the park's busiest attractions.

3. Visit Loro Parque

Loro Parque is one of Tenerife's most popular days out – and for good reason. Wander through lush tropical gardens and get up close to an incredible variety of animals. Tip: arrive early to beat the crowds and enjoy everything at a more leisurely pace.

4. Take a boat trip along the coast

Catamaran cruises and boat excursions are fantastic ways to explore Tenerife’s coastline. Have you always dreamed of spotting dolphins and whales in their natural habitat? Then the south-west coast is the perfect place. For a more relaxed outing, opt for a boat trip with swimming stops and plenty of time to soak up the sun.

5. Discover Teno and Masca

Here, you’ll see a side of Tenerife that many travellers miss. Narrow roads, steep ravines, and the village of Masca hidden away among the mountains. The views along the way are every bit as impressive as the destination itself.

6. Take an excursion to La Gomera

From Tenerife, you can easily take a day trip to La Gomera. Many excursions combine a visit to Garajonay National Park, San Sebastián, and local traditions such as Silbo Gomero, the island’s unique whistled language.

7. Explore Tenerife’s towns and villages

Don’t overlook the towns and villages. In La Laguna, you can stroll through colourful streets; in Garachico, you’ll see how the island reinvented itself after a volcanic eruption. And in Icod de los Vinos, you’ll find an 800-year-old dragon tree – one of Tenerife’s most iconic symbols..

Plan your visit to Tenerife

You can visit Tenerife throughout the year. In winter, it’s a popular destination for sunshine and outdoor activities, while summer is perfect for beach holidays. Keep in mind that the north of the island is greener and generally receives more rainfall than the sunnier south.

We recommend spending at least five days in Tenerife. This gives you enough time to visit Teide National Park , enjoy a boat trip, explore a few towns and villages, and relax on the beach. If you’d also like to visit La Gomera, Loro Parque or discover several different regions of the island, it’s best to allow seven to ten days.

The south is sunnier and better known for its beaches and holiday resorts. The north is greener, quieter and more cultural. Head south if you're looking to relax, or choose the north for nature, charming villages and a more authentic local atmosphere.

Looking for peace and quiet? Head to Benijo Beach. Prefer a beach with more facilities? Las Teresitas is an excellent choice. If you're after dramatic volcanic scenery, El Bollullo and La Tejita are both well worth a visit. Each beach has its own character, so choose the one that best suits your trip.

Five days gives you enough time to combine a visit to Teide National Park, Siam Park, Loro Parque, La Laguna, Masca and a boat trip along the south-west coast. Add some beach time at Las Teresitas or La Tejita for the perfect mix of nature, culture and relaxation.

Winter is a great time to explore Tenerife. You can go hiking, visit Teide National Park, spot whales and dolphins, discover picturesque villages and enjoy the beaches in the south. Thanks to the island's mild climate, you can make the most of everything Tenerife has to offer all year round.

Tenerife offers something for everyone. Take a trip up Mount Teide for breathtaking scenery, join a boat tour along the coast, or spend a day at Siam Park. Combine outdoor adventures with time to relax, and plan your visits early in the day to avoid the busiest crowds.

Yes. The south-west coast is one of the best places in Europe to spot whales and dolphins in the wild. For a more peaceful and responsible experience, choose a smaller boat tour – you'll often enjoy a more personal trip and have a better chance of an unforgettable wildlife encounter.

Tenerife is an excellent destination for families. Siam Park and Loro Parque are firm favourites, while a boat trip or a relaxing day at the beach is always a hit. Mix active days with quieter moments to keep everyone happy and make the most of your family holiday.
