La Gomera tour with Garajonay Forest and San Sebastian

4.3/5
1314 reviews

La Gomera boasts unspoilt landscapes and a distinct culture all of its own. On this tour, you'll visit this Jurassic-like island and discover Garajonay National Park, a string of villages and the charming capital, San Sebastian. Arianne, one of our guides, says of the island, ‘La Gomera is a totally different world – it's a return to the past, to the origin of the Canary Islands.'

The star of the show is without doubt Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It's a mishmash of deep ravines and gorges filled with ancient, misty laurel forests and rare plant life. On a visit to its interpretative centre, you'll find out about its botany and history. You'll also get to know hamlets such as oasis-like Chejelipes, which is on the banks of a reservoir, and the northern villages of Hermigua and Aguilo.

And you'll get you to learn about local culture, too. There's a demonstration of the unique-to-the-island ‘whistling language' known as 'silbo gomero'. To round off the experience, there's free time to explore San Sebastian. Here, you can follow in the footsteps of Columbus before he began his first voyage of discovery. More than a visit to another island, a trip to La Gomera is a journey to another era.

Guide was excellent and extremely knowledgeable but because our group were mostly German, we felt she spent more time talking in German than Englsh and we may therefore have misssed out on some of what she said. We weren't expecting a gourmet meal but for the price of this tour, the standard of the lunch was very basic and the staff at the restaurant lacked any warmth.

La Gomera is a stunning Island and it didn't disappoint. The scenery is breath taking and the Guide, Isabella was very knowledgeable. She talked fluently between English and German the whole day. The tour included a meal with wine. I chose the vegetarian option but there was also Beef or Tuna. Most opted for the tuna which came in a yellow sauce. I understand it was prepared in the Canarian way but most didn't seem to enjoy it. That seemed to be the only downside to the day.

We really enjoyed our guide, enthusiastic, very competent and friendly personality. The sudden heavy rain in the national park was a minus, but that was not something that was due to any fault of Tui.

Going from Los Gigantes, we were picked up before7am and didn't get back until 8.45 pm, just before dinner service finished so had to go into the restaurant looking a mess, which got some looks. Maybe a minibus service to a central collection point would be less tedious than nearly 2hrs back dropping everyone back off. The trip was interesting even if we couldn't stop at all the view points as coaches already there. Need to be told to take ID in the trip information.

Our Guide was Lovely, kind, very organised and extremely knowledgeable. The coach driver was nice and steady going around the local winding roads. The island of La Gomera was interesting and diverse. The meal was very well organised and it was nice to try a sample of the local food. Unfortunately the weather wasn't very good whilst we were there, but that is no ones fault. The trip was still enjoyable.

We enjoyed the trip. Our guide was good, but explained a lot more in German than English and was difficult to understand at times.
