Guided Tour of Ek' Balam and Valladolid with Cenote and Lunch

Get a close-up look at Maya history and traditions on this off-the-beaten-track tour. You'll visit the ancient Maya city of Ek' Balam – the most recent to be opened to the public – as well as Yalcoba to swim in the cenote and a stop in Valladolid. Francesca, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Archaeologists only began uncovering Ek' Balam in 1985, and they're still digging away today. It's a more complete site than many others, and you can still imagine daily life in the Maya town going on around you as you explore. But the main reason I enjoy Ek' Balam is that there are so few visitors.'We'll start the adventure with a guided visit of Ek' Balam, which translates as ‘Black Jaguar.' The site has more than 40 structures and its walls formed a maze, while the main pyramid, known as the Acropolis, has a well-preserved entrance surrounded by the open jaws and fangs of a jaguar. It's bigger than even El Castillo at Chichen Itzá. Best of all, you can climb to the top – which few Maya sites allow.Afterwards, we'll head to Yalcoba where you can try your hand at chocolate-making and learn how to craft obsidian at a workshop. After a tequila and mezcal tasting you'll have time to enjoy the crystalline cenote, then tuck into a tasty buffet lunch of typical regional dishes. Lastly, we'll have a quick stop in central Valladolid, a city known for its art and architecture and a picture-perfect medley of colourful colonial buildings and historic churches.

You'll get to step back in time at this archaeological site, followed by ziplining and cenote swimming at Hacienda Chukum, a buffet lunch of regional classics, and a visit to Valladolid. Maria, one of our local guides, says, ‘Known as the ‘Black Jaguar' or ‘Star Jaguar', it's not every day you get to see such massive structures and what makes Ek Balam unique are its unique double walls that encircle the central area'. At Ek' Balam, get ready for a blast into Maya history discovering over 40 structures, with the opportunity to climb several monuments. Prepare to be wowed by pyramids and the towering acropolis, offering epic shots of the site and surrounding lush jungle. Next up, let's kick the adventure up a notch at Hacienda Chukum. Things to do in Cancun

Situated on the Yucatan Peninsula with a-class views of the Caribbean Sea, Cancun is a sought-after destination – for both beach lovers and history buffs alike. With its crystal-clear waters, Mayan ruins, and delightful culinary tradition, Cancun has something for every taste. It’s also an ideal starting point for delving into the surrounding areas, teeming with pristine natural sites and archaeological treasures. The 6 best activities to do in Cancun 1. Visit the Mayan ruins of Tulum Less than a two-hour drive from Cancun brings you to Tulum, famous for the ruins of an ancient Mayan city perched on a cliff overlooking the sea. This UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a fascinating glimpse into Mayan civilization. Stroll among well-preserved ruins, admire the El Castillo pyramid, the Temple of the Frescoes, and soak up views of the Caribbean Sea. The beach below the ruins, Playa del Paraíso, is one of the most beautiful in the area – so don’t forget your swimsuits. 2. Snorkel on Cozumel Island

Another popular day trip from Cancun is to Cozumel Island, a top hit for snorkelling and diving enthusiasts, thanks to the colourful coral reef that surrounds it. The waters are crystal clear and teeming with marine life. If you prefer to stay dry, there are many other activities to try. For example, you can explore the Mayan ruins of San Gervasio, visit the town of San Miguel de Cozumel or relax on the beautiful beaches.

3. Explore Chichen Itza

A trip to Cancun wouldn't be complete without visiting Chichen Itza – one of the seven wonders of the modern world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s the most famous Mayan archaeological site worldwide, showcasing ingenious structures including the Kukulkan pyramid. We suggest arriving early in the morning to avoid the crowds with a guided tour to fully appreciate its history. 4. Swim in a cenote

Swimming in a cenote is a mystical and thrilling experience, and the Cancun area is particularly rich in these caves filled with freshwater. Taking a plunge into these natural pools is an excellent way to cool off from the tropical heat of the Yucatan. Some of the cenotes, such as the sacred Ik Kil Cenote near Chichen Itza, are surrounded by lush vegetation, creating a truly magical atmosphere. 5. Indulge in street food

Cancun is a paradise for those who love a taste of local street food. Tacos, tamales, elotes (grilled corn), and marquesitas are just a few examples of yummy treats that showcase rich Mexican and Yucatan food culture. Don't miss the opportunity to try cochinita pibil – a slow-roasted pork dish typical of the region. Savour it all by pairing it with a glass of horchata, a sweet rice-based drink spiced with cinnamon.

6. Take a trip to Sian Ka'an

The Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the perfect outing for nature lovers. This protected area includes tropical forests, mangroves, marshes, and a coral reef brimming with marine life. Hop on a boat tour to spot manatees, dolphins, and hundreds of bird species. With a bit of luck, you might even catch a glimpse of a jaguar or a tapir in the forest.

Plan your visit to Cancun

What's the best time to visit Cancun?

Cancun's tropical climate guarantees warm temperatures throughout the year. However, the best time for visiting Cancun is from December and March, with dry and pleasant warm temperatures, usually staying below 30 degrees Celcius. We recommend avoiding September and October as these are the rainiest months and there is a higher chance of hurricanes.

How long do you need to visit Cancun?

There are so many things to do in Cancun and the surrounding areas, which is why we recommend staying in this location for at least 5 days. This way, you'll have the opportunity to dedicate two days to excursions to Chichen Itza and Tulum (both must-sees), and a full day of relaxation on one of the islands, whether it's Holbox, Isla Mujeres, or Cozumel. However, for the full experience and to take it easy, we recommend staying for at least 10 days.

What are the best beaches in Cancun?

Cancun and its surroundings are famous for beautiful beaches. Playa Delfines is the most popular beach in Cancun, spacious and well-equipped, named after the dolphins that are often spotted on the horizon. Playa Chac Mool is a secluded paradise, perfect for both relaxation and water sports enthusiasts. Playa Langosta, with its calm and shallow waters, is the ideal choice for families. Finally, for a truly local experience, visit Playa Caracol, small but with soft sands and crystal-clear waters.
