Hydra Island boat trip including free time in the town
Excursions & day trips

Hydra Island boat trip including free time in the town

Take in one of the most appealing islands in the Saronic Gulf with this boat cruise. Sail across the Aegean Sea and come ashore to explore Hydra – an ancient port of call where cars and motorbikes are banned. Irini, one of our local guides, says, ‘Donkeys are the most common transport on Hydra, and you'll see them lined up like taxis, waiting to carry your heavy cases or shopping bags for you. For the island's population, they are an essential part of the infrastructure, and they definitely add charm to the port town.' After pick-up from your hotel, we'll travel to the port of Ermoni. Once aboard the boat, you can sit back and soak up some sunshine as we sail across the Saronic Gulf to Hydra. There's so much history in this part of the Aegean, as it was an important ancient trade route. Irini says, ‘Hydra's prosperity grew in the 18th and 19th centuries, when it became a major hub for shipping and trade in the Eastern Mediterranean. The island's skilled sailors and shipbuilders established Hydra as a dominant force in the maritime industry.'When you arrive at the car and motorbike-free island of Hydra, you'll have free time to explore. You can linger in the harbour to spot colourful fishing boats bobbing on the sea, stroll past sugar cube houses on the hillside, or venture into the town's maze of cobbled alleys for a coffee or some shopping.

Things to do in Athens

One of the world’s most historic cities, Athens has the ideal blend of ancient history and modern culture. Greece’s capital invites you to wander through its mythical streets, where thousands of years of stories come to life. From the majestic Acropolis to lively neighbourhoods filled with tavernas and colourful street art, Athens seamlessly blends the old and the new, creating an atmosphere that will stay with you for years to come.

Top six activities in Athens

1. Visit the iconic Acropolis

Almost every trip to Athens starts with a visit to the world-famous Acropolis. This UNESCO World Heritage Site stands tall above the city and is a symbol of ancient Greece. The Parthenon, characterised by its grand columns and perfect proportions, is considered an architectural masterpiece. If you want to soak up panoramic views over the city before the main crowds get there, early morning is the best time to visit this spot.

2. Check out the Acropolis Museum

The ultra-modern Acropolis Museum is a must if you want to see ancient Grecian artefacts. The museum itself is another architectural jewel, and is home to thousands of artefacts, offering a glimpse into the day-to-day life of the ancient Greeks. Plus, if you look down through the glass floors, you’ll see the ongoing excavations underneath the museum.

3. Step back in time at the Ancient Agora of Athens

Stroll through the ancient Agora, once the beating heart of Athens. This is where philosophers like Socrates and Plato held their debates, and where important political meetings took place. But, it was also the city’s main market. To get a real feel for what ancient city life was like, head over to the Temple of Hephaestus, one of the best-preserved Greek Temples, or stroll under the Stoa of Attalus, a reconstructed covered walkway.

4. Take a trip to Cape Sounion

Just an hour and a half drive from Athens, you'll find the Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion. This temple, dedicated to the god of the sea, is known as one of the best spots to see the sunset in all of Greece. The mix of millennia-old history and coastal views here make for a day trip you won’t forget.

5. Wander through the Plaka District

Wander through the pedestrian streets of Plaka, the oldest neighbourhood in Athens. This lively area is known for its traditional tavernas, authentic shops, and colourful bougainvillea plants. Taste local specialties, shop for handmade souvenirs and take in the laidback atmosphere this place is known for.

6. Visit the Central Market

Also known as Varvakeios Agora, this market is a sensory experience you shouldn't miss. Taste the real Athens as you wander among stalls filled with fresh fish, meat, bread, local delicacies, herbs and more. The lively atmosphere and interactions with local vendors make it one of the most authentic experiences in the city.

Get ready to visit Athens

What is the best time to visit Athens?

Athens is ideal during spring, from April to May, or in autumn, from September to October. During these times, the weather is pleasant, and the temperatures range from 20 to 25°C – perfect for sightseeing. You’ll avoid the extreme heat of the summer months, as well as the main tourist crowds – plus, if you’re lucky, you’ll find some reasonably-priced accommodation.

How many days do you need to visit Athens?

You need at least three days to see all of Athens’ main attractions. This gives you enough time to visit the Acropolis and surrounding archaeological sites, see the main museums, and stop by different neighbourhoods. If you want to visit more of the city’s surroundings, you should stay for at least five days.

What excursions can you take from Athens?

From Athens, you can head out on various excursions. Popular destinations include the Peloponnese peninsula, where you can visit Mycenae, Epidaurus theatre, the Saronic Islands, like Hydra and Aegine. Cape Sounion, where you’ll find the Temple of Poseidon, is also a great day out. The Meteora Monasteries and Delphi, with its famous oracle, are around three hours away, but worth the journey.
