Guided island tour of western Rhodes’ top attractions

4.3/5
1078 reviews

Dotted with sleepy villages, pine-clad mountains and age-old ruins, western Rhodes has a rugged beauty all of its own. This tour ticks off some of the top picks. You'll visit the ancient city of Kamiros, the mountain villages of Embona and Siana as well as Butterfly Valley – home to hundreds of Callimorpha butterflies. Nicholas, one of our expert local guides, says, "Kamiros offers a glimpse into the daily life of its ancient inhabitants and shows how ingenious the people who built it were. The water supply system, with its complex network of cisterns and aqueducts, is well-preserved and really interesting."

First up is Butterfly Valley – a natural park home to hundreds of the friendly, fluttering creatures. Wander along shaded wooden walkways and enjoy the calming pools of trickling water as you observe these colourful insects all around – stay still and one may even land on you. As well as the butterflies, the park features a variety of other flora and fauna, including lots of wildflowers and birds.

Next, you'll travel back in time at ancient Kamiros. The tidily laid out streets and remains of the agora and acropolis will give you a sense of how the residents went about their daily lives in the 5th century BC. You'll get an app on entry, which shows how the city would have looked in 3D. Next, you'll have free time for lunch in Embona – the highest village in Rhodes – and visit the mountain-side settlement of Siana.

Enjoyed all the visits and the taverna for lunch very much. It was good value for money. Very good guide and driver. Disliked the amount of time spent on the coach for pick up and drop off, about 1 1/2 hours each way.

Our guide Emma was great and the coach driver was very careful. We had a nice new coach too. We would have liked more time for the butterfly valley. The wine tasting stop wasn’t very interesting. There were too many pick up stops on the way there and back. It would be better to include the tickets for the visits and lunch in the main ticket price.

I particularly enjoyed the archeological site at Kamiros and info provided by guide was interesting and helpful. The valley of the butterflies came at the end of the busy tiring day and more info on the amount of steps and gradients would have been helpful to prepare for it. A little extra time there would also have been good as it felt a bit rushed. Otherwise great day out seeing bits of the lovely island we would not have otherwise visited.

Enjoyed it all. Very informative. Guide had to speak too languages side by side. Very good. Had a 16 euro meal which was very nice apart from giving us an orange for the pud! Bit disappointing.

The guide, coach and pick up arrangements were all excellent. My husband and I really enjoyed the visit to Ancient Kamiros which was an incredible site. The butterfly valley was quite magical. We would much rather have had twice as long at each of those sites and not have to spend ages driving to and visiting the church, wine tasting and long lunch stop. Apart from tourist shops there was nothing to do at the lunch stop if you didn't want a big lunch.

Overall it was very well planned day and good value for money. Lunch was not included but we opted to eat at the planned stop. Whilst the price was very reasonable, the food was not particularly good and that is our only criticism
