Nisyros volcanic isle tour from Kos with boat trip and optional transfers

4.4/5
3797 reviews

If there's one must-visit while you're in Kos, it's the volcanic island of Nisyros. Greek legend says it was created from a stone thrown by the god Poseidon. And it's a scenic gem of an hour-long trip that takes you there. Visit Mandraki, Nikia, and the Stefanos crater - they're all part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.

Once you've docked in the harbour of Mandraki, the island's capital, you'll head to the old village of Nikia on the edge of the Stefanos crater. Lose yourself in the labyrinth of cobblestone lanes or find a spot near the crater's edge, where you can feel the heat.

Afterwards, head back to Mandraki. Sugar-cubed houses stretch across this amphitheatre-shaped town, which is in the shadow of a medieval castle and the cliff-side monastery of Panagia Spiliani.

The guide Manolis who we met on the island was very good and made it an interesting day. However the guide on the coach effectively abandoned the English speaking guests after leaving confusing instructions for how to find the ferry. She pointed in a general direction of the ferry and left us to work out the procedures for boarding a working ferry with no ticket or further instruction. It didn't feel quite what we and other guests were expecting from a TUI excursion.

This trip was so informative and very eye opening for me. Our tour guide was Manilos, he was so friendly, interactive and extremely knowledgeable in all aspects of the trip. We learned about the history of the island, the working conditions and culture of Nisyros and so much more. I would recommend this to anybody who is visiting Kos, it was the best part of my holiday and I found it so interesting to learn so much I wouldn’t never have thought to learn about otherwise.

I felt that too much was crammed into the day. I'd have preferred visiting just the one village and being able to spend longer there to lunch and explore.
