Higuey and River Yuma full-day tour with lunch and Voodoo show

4.3/5
517 reviews

Sugarcane, sacred shrines, a riverboat trip and even a voodoo show. This exclusive excursion has a bit of everything that makes the Dominican Republic so fascinating. Expect to meet plenty of locals and explore inland around the River. Get off the beaten track for a true flavour of Dominican culture and society when you visit a fruit farm, a fishing village and a market. Luis, one of our expert guides, says, ‘Higuey is where most of the local resort staff live, and it's an enriching experience to see daily life in full swing. At the market, you can buy all sorts, from a bottle of rum to a live chicken.'

You'll get a real taste for the country straight away with a visit to a plantation. Savour tropical fruits such as papaya and pineapple as well as coffee and cocoa. Up next is Higuey, the provincial capital, where you'll get to poke around for spices in the market and see locals stocking up on fresh produce. You'll also pass by the lamdark modern basilica – an important shrine.

Next, we head south through tropical countryside to the little fishing village of Boca de Yuma. After a leisurely lunch of Caribbean dishes prepared with local ingredients, you'll set off on a boat ride on the River Yuma. Afterwards, discover the complicated history of Dominican sugarcane plantations at a ‘batey'. These plantation camps are home to communities of sugarcane-harvesting Haitians. Meet and chat with the community, and then watch as they put on a voodoo show.

Excellent way to see a variety of aspects of local life and different ways of living. A great guide in Mumma Gina and generous service from the on-service barman. Overall, a great combination of education and fun!

The knowledge gained and seeing the Dominican culture was excellent. The guide "Mamma G" was crazy but good, could have gave us some viewing and thinking time. Too much time spent on the coach, took 2 hours to pick everyone up which could have been avoided. More time needed for us to have photo opportunities. More time could have been had on the boat and much less time driving through the sugar cane fields.

Firstly it’s important that people realise there is A LOT of time spent on a coach. Probably 8 out of 11.5+ hours. It’s not especially child friendly- the guide was fun and accommodating but made a lot of innuendo & swore a lot. Higuey was oversold- no chance to see the church other than a drive-by. Market suggests shopping but that was non existent. The family home was wonderful. The boat trip was great albeit short and the trip to the sugar plantation was long but rewarding/humbling.

Really enjoyed the market and family experience. The river trip was great too. The journey through the sugar canes to the voodoo show felt too long for just 30mins at the voodoo. Mama Gina was really enthusiastic and lots of fun.

Trip was booked for Monday and dates confirmed twice with the rep. Got up at six was told they would let us in for early breakfast with ticket, but we were sent to 24 hour sports bar. Got to reception 15 minutes before 7 pick up. Waited in front of hotel for 1hr and 30 minutes but never got picked up. Rep turned up 30 minutes late said trip was actually Thursday but they could contact me, despite having my email and mobile number on booking form
