Full-day tour of Higuey with local lunch at a ranch

4.3/5
211 reviews

This snapshot of Dominican life beyond the Coconut Coast has all the makings for a great day out. A sugarcane farm and a cigar-rolling demonstration are just some of the highlights, along with lunch at a local ranch. As Ramon, one of our local guides, says, ‘I'm always proud to show off my heritage through our food. Like the island itself, Dominican cuisine has been influenced by Taino, Spanish and African flavours. There's even a hint of the Middle East in some dishes. You'll see, smell and taste a whole new side to our country.'

We kick off early, with a trip to Higuey to see the famous Altagracia Basilica – a pilgrimage site because of its miraculous image of Our Lady. Then, make sure to have your camera at the ready as we take a scenic drive through rustic villages, on our way to the next stop – a coconut oil producer. You'll also visit a sugarcane farm for a rum tasting session and watch a cigar-rolling demonstration with a master of his craft.

After such a busy morning, you'll be ready for your lunch - a feast of typical dishes made with locally sourced produce. You'll also get to see a family's farm and coffee estate, and taste freshly grown cocoa and fruit. We'll round the day of exploration with some time to relax in natural surroundings and maybe enjoy a swim.

Travelling in safari style vehicle was a novel experience feeling every bump in the track and road. The driver was very accommodating helping me and other member's of my group on and off the vehicle. The steps too and from the bus however we're a little uneven and steep. The guide was excellent throughout. Visiting each venue was well thought out and it was very interesting hearing about the Dominican Republic way of life.

Fantastic trip, whole family enjoyed and could not stop talking about the experience afterwards, gets you out of the hotel bubble, and you glimpse parts of the raw Dominican Republic life and characters that make this tour amazing, Guides are great food is amazing cigar making/ chocolate and coffee fascinating to watch and learn some of the ways in which the locals produce so much in their own amazing country. Highly recommend and not one to miss. Can’t say enough good things about the day

Enjoyed the day, but was unaware that we would be riding in an open safari bus without toilet facilities and at times travelled over some extreme terrain. The Guide was extremely informative and spoke excellent English. The half hour visit to Macao beach was awful. The area was crammed, the sand & sea was dirty. The guide found a shard of glass in.the sand right beside our table. It could have been very unpleasant otherwise. Too many obnoxious rude sellers trying to sell their wares.

What a fab day out we all loved it from start to finish. Going through local towns, casa Maria was great tasting the coffee, products. We went to the tobacco making , then a traditional lunch , my daughter loved when we stopped for the horse riding it was her highlight. Ruddy the tour guide & Johanne the driver were fab. I’d say if had to change anything leave off the Macao beach at the end as you only had 25 mins and we would have preferred another little stop off in another village .
