Dominated by Mt Epomeo, Ischia's a small but mountainous island off the northern tip of the Bay of Naples. With blossoming gardens, spa towns and jaw-dropping scenery, it also makes for a delightful day trip from Sorrento. This one features a scenic drive, free time for lunch and the famed La Mortella Gardens.

First up on this full day tour is the hydrofoil crossing from Sorrento to volcanic Ischia. On arrival, you'll get to know the island with a panoramic drive to see its highlights. There's a break for lunch before the next part of the tour.

In the afternoon, the star of the show is the subtropical La Mortella Gardens. Created and lovingly tended to during decades by English composer William Walton and his Argentinian wife, Susana, they feature more than 300 rare and exotic plants, along with ornate statues and waterfalls. Check out the views from the upper hill over the Bay of Forio, before more free time until it's time to board the boat again.

Whilst we knew that there would be walking in the gardens we did not expect the amount of walking from the ferry to the coach and coach to ferry on Ischia. It was a ridiculous distance and very steep in the heat. The rep wasn't overly concerned how far we were back from the group and didn't ask us if we were having difficulties. There was a junior second rep, who didn't seem to do anything.

Tour is advertised as an 8 hour tour. From leaving hotel at 0800 and getting back close to 1900 is way past 8 hours. Note should be addedb8 journey minimum but this depends on ferry timetable which is beyond operators control. Guide made us aware of times before tour started so had I had no issues, others may have.

The gardens are beautiful. It was a long day in high heat but worth it. The ferries don’t run often so our visit to the gardens was 2 hours but the day was actually 9 hours long with travel and photostops. The gardens are on a slope so there’s a bit of walking uphill however even if you just see the first bits it is still worth visiting. We didn’t opt in for the optional lunch and just had coffee then ate in cafe at gardens which was lovely. Our guide was really good

The whole experience was very good and our guide was very informative with all aspects of this delightful island. Sadly we're in our seventies and the weather was particularly hot so we couldn't get to see all of the gardens.

Very long day but enjoyable. Be prepared with plenty of water. Ischia is lovely.

It was a very long day Would have been better as just a garden tour. And spent more time in garden rather than a journey to one photo opportunity...then a long drive to gardens.
