What to do in Naples

Naples is a one-of-a-kind city, where every step you take opens your eyes to unique culture, tradition, and a rich history. You'll be fascinated by beautiful monuments, works of art, and activities to satisfy every taste. From archaeological sites to catacombs, strolling through the vibrant historic centre and squares – Naples is bound to steal your heart. Get ready to visit the capital of Campania and check out its must-see attractions.

The 6 best activities to do in Naples

1. Explore the Catacombs of Naples

Step back in time and explore the subterranean realm of Naples' Catacombs. Walk along the intricate network of tunnels for a snapshot of the lives of early Christian communities in the region. As you stroll through these underground cemeteries, carved out of stone, you’ll get up close to ancient frescoes, statues, and funerary art. It’s a spooky but worthwhile experience.

2. Eat pizza

A visit to Naples wouldn’t be complete without a taste of Neapolitan pizza. While we can’t guarantee it originated here, the Neapolitan pizza has undoubtedly become the most famous of them all. Head to the historic city centre to get a taste of the classic Margherita – and keep an eye out for other options such as fried pizza and the popular street food pizza portafoglio. Both are delicious!

3. Take part in a guided tour of the Ruins of Pompeii

Just a stone’s throw away from Naples is one of the world’s most famous Roman archaeological sites – Pompeii. Take a full day to explore this exceptionally preserved Unesco World Heritage Site that’s been frozen in time after the 79AD eruption of Vesuvius. To make the most of the site, we suggest a guided tour to cover the highlights and delve into its history. If you’ve got time, add Herculaneum to your trip. It’s Pompeii’s smaller sidekick that also saw the effects of the eruption – and you’ll find fewer tourists.

4. Enjoy an excursion up Mount Vesuvius

Every corner of Naples offers a glimpse of Mount Vesuvius – but don’t just look from a distance – head on up. The Vesuvius National Park has 11 different trails on offer. The Gran Cono trail is the most scenic, taking visitors through lava flows and ash to the volcano’s crater. At the top, you’ll get to soak up panoramic views of the Gulf of Naples. The slopes of Vesuvius are the perfect setting if you want to enjoy local wine tasting and a traditional lunch.

5. Explore Piazza del Plebiscito

At the heart of the city is where you’ll find Piazza Plebiscito, one of the biggest squares in Naples – and in Italy. This elegant square is a must-see on your city tour, surrounded by architectural gems like the Royal Palace and the Basilica of San Francesco di Paola. It’s also a great place to take a coffee break or grab an ice cream.

6. Admire the Veiled Christ

Another unmissable attraction in Naples is the sculpture of the Veiled Christ, located in the San Severo Chapel. You’ll be amazed by this 18th-century marble masterpiece of Jesus lying on a bed, covered by an extraordinary transparent veil – so perfect it could be cloth. Learn about the legends of ‘marbilisation’ as well as Raimondo di Sandro, a scientist and alchemist who commissioned the work.

Plan your visit to Naples

With such a wide range of activities to enjoy in Naples, it’s a great year-round destination. We recommend avoiding the summer months as the city can be crowded with tourists and the weather can get very hot. During the rest of the year, the climate is generally mild. Winters aren’t too cold but there is a higher chance of rain.

There are many things to see in Naples, but with a weekend you’ll be able to explore the historic centre and some other local hotspots. We suggest at least 4 days in the city, so you’ll also have time to visit nearby Pompeii or Herculaneum.

If it’s your first time in Naples, we recommend staying in the historic centre, Spaccanapoli, or Via Toledo – the main shopping street in the city. A relaxed area by the seafront is the Lungomare di Napoli where various events are held, and is especially nice in summer. The university district in the Porto neighbourhood is also a good option, slightly cheaper and well connected to the city centre.
