Like nearby Pompeii, ancient Herculaneum suffered a similar fate at the hands of Vesuvius erupting in 79AD. Fortunately, archaeologists have managed to excavate parts of the city, and this half-day tour will show you what they've managed to unearth so far.

Fossilised in time by the volcanic rock that tragically buried the city, wandering around the archaeological site of Herculaneum is just like stepping through an open-air history book. This bite-size tour will take you to and from the site in just one morning, with enough time to explore the historical relics on a guided walk.

You'll even see preserved pieces of furniture, upper wooden floors of houses, mosaics on the floor and sculptures as you take a peek around the houses and streets. All this has made it a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and provides you with an unrivalled insight into life of the ancient Romans.

It will be helpful for future that they inform you that snacks and water need to be taken with you as it is quite a long half day and there’s not enough time to get lunch at the Herculaneum. For older and slightly slower visitors need to be hydrated and shaded more as we had one person on our group that was taken unwell and she was sent away on her own with her husband without any help.

The guide I think called Irena was excellent. She didn't go too fast regularly ensuring everyone was still with the group especially going up the stairs and slope from the caves of skeletons at was the waterfront. She was very informative throughout detailing the important places and how Herculaneum worked and what happened when Vesuvius erupted. As a result 2 hours is enough at the site. The only downside for us was the return in Sorrento the dropoffs took over an hour going over mountain roads

You're not allowed to enter the site with rucksacks, handbags, luggage and any cases larger than 30 x 30 x 15cm. There are cloakrooms you can use free of charge
On the first Sunday of each month, entrance to archaeological sites are free of charge. This has already been deducted from the price on the relevant dates

Everything about this excursion was well executed. The tour guide was brilliant and very knowledgeable, giving information all the way to the site of Herculaneum as well as on site. The whisper ear devices were also very good and allowed clear passage of information from the guide.

Our guide was very knowledgeable and spoke excellent English. We didn't feel rushed and felt we managed to see everything. I would definitely recommend a guided tour otherwise we would have missed lots of detail. Could do with better earpieces but otherwise excellent.

The half day tour to Herculaneum was fantastic! From pick up to the return it all went smoothly and was very well organised.
