Spinalonga Island Tour Ticket

4.5/5
102 reviews

The tiny island of Spinalonga is just a short hop away from Crete but a visit is like stepping back in time. Centuries of history are packed within the walls that encircle the islet. You'll sail to Spinalonga from Elounda, a 25-minute cruise.

On arrival at the islet – which is no more than 435m long and 230m wide – you'll find yourself immersed in its history straight away. Over the years, Spinalonga has been a Venetian outpost, an Ottoman town and a leper colony, which led to it being dubbed the ‘isle of tears'.

A guided walk will show you around the Venetian fortress and the leper colony – which closed in the 1950s. See the main street, still lined with the shops and houses where the lepers attempted to live ordinary lives. And look round the old hospital and graveyard. After fascinating if poignant visit, you'll board the boat and sail back to Elounda.

The trip was great in general, however I feel for 45 euros pp there should be a shuttle to the port provided for the half day trip also as we were left to find our own way, wait for a non Tui rep to check us onto the boat then again find our own way own way to the guide.

The tour was "half-day", start at 9am, end time before 12pm, so calling it "half-day" is a stretch. I also say before 12 because the boat left without us, leaving us stranded on the island; no message to anyone else, no instructions in this eventuality. When the tour finished our guide advised we had 30 minutes to explore ourselves – not enough time, exactly 30 minutes later we were at the pickup and the boat had gone! Tour information was good, but too long, would benefit some breaks.

Tour was very interesting Maria our guide was very knowledgeable and answered any questions we had. We had our children ages 10 and 13 and the tour could have been a little bit more basic at some points so they understood more. We were told to be at Elounda for 9 however boat didn’t set off till 10 so lots of waiting about in the heat. Overall a very interesting trip .

Very expensive, considering if you just booked directly with the boat company/island. Tour guide was amazing. Boat staff were lovely.
