Spinalonga No Frills Tour

4.4/5
150 reviews

Spinalonga is one of Crete's most talked about sights. It was Europe's last leper colony and scores of lepers lived here, in exile from the mainland, until 1957. Sail to this eerie island just 15-minutes from the mainland and explore this relic of the past.

Arriving at the island, you'll find yourself immersed in its history right away. Over the years, it's been a Venetian outpost, an Ottoman town and most notoriously, a leper colony which led to it being dubbed the ‘isle of tears'.

A guided walk will show you around the Venetian fortress and the main street lined with the shops and houses where the lepers attempted to live ordinary lives. You'll get to look round the old hospital and graveyard, too. Later, you'll sail back to Elounda where you can swim in the sea, stretch out in the sunshine or watch the world go by at a waterside café. There's also free time to find lunch in a local taverna and a visit to the chic resort of Agios Nikolaos.

Appalling service from TUI - pick up location details were not clear which caused us to miss the pick up. You have admitted the ambiguity, but have only offered part refund. I have spent all holiday trying to rectify this. On top of this was accused of lying by your customer service staff

The guide was brilliant and very informative. Please note that with the no frills tour the entrance to the island and lunch isn’t included. It currently costs €20 for the entrance to the island.

Prompt pick up and guide gave interesting information about Crete on the journey to Spinalonga. Boat ready to take us to the island so straight over to Spinalonga with the tour starting on arrival so no time wasted. Great information again and moving along making sure we saw everything (really poignant place to visit, worth every penny). A little free time at the end then back to Elounda. We did our own thing so had lunch then browsed the shops before heading to Agios Nicholas. Great day trip.

Great trip, and our guide Maria was excellent. A little rushed at each stop point, probably as the coach collection was running late which condensed the day a bit. 2 hour coach trip there and back was a bit too long too, and felt more like a coach trip than anything else. But overall a really good day, and a great way to see the area - would recommend.
