Kairouan Holy City and El Jem tour from Hammamet

4.3/5
236 reviews

Kairouan's old town echoes Tunisia's past, with a peaceful air that hasn't changed much in centuries. On this tour, you'll discover history-drenched locations such as the Roman colosseum of El Djem, Africa's second-oldest mosque and the medina of Kairouan. Karim, one of our expert local guides, says "Kairouan is Tunisia's holiest destination, renowned for its fine Islamic architecture. The interior of the Great Mosque is all endless pillars and arches, colourful carpets, and chandeliers shaped like pine trees that add to the beauty of the space. Even the drains are decorated with intricate stonework."

We'll start off in the walled city of Kairouan. Protected by sandstone walls, the old town offers medina is a maze of narrow streets, whitewashed houses with brightly painted shutters and brick-laid archways, perfect for exploring. Then you'll visit Kairouan's unmissable Great Mosque - considered one of the finest examples of Islamic architecture in the region. As well as the mosque's splendid interior, the complex also features a large prayer hall, an arcaded courtyard, and a minaret.

Another important site in Kairouan is the Sidi Sahbi mausoleum, known for its beautiful tilework and stucco decorations – it's a popular site for pilgrimages. Next, there's a stop for lunch before visiting El Djem amphitheatre, the third-largest built by the Romans. During its heyday, up to 35,000 spectators would pack its steep stands to watch gladiatorial fights.

A very knowledgeable guide, steady driver. Plenty of toilet opportunities. Lunch was fine.

Seeing the colloseum and mosaic museum was good however I would not rate the tour guide or driver. The guide was not very engaging from the beginning, not very good English and didn't seem attentive. The driver was on his phone and driving several times which wasn't safe at all. Due to this , this was the least liked excursion experience we have had and not worth the money if staff are not that good to keep people engaged

The attractions we visited were fantastic. However there is approximately 5+ hour's of coach travel for about 3 hours of actual time at the attractions.

Excellent guide gave loads of information, clear on itinerary and timings, sense of humour, good English. Sites were really interesting and good balance guided vs free time. Lunch was a buffet, excellent food with good choices. We had very early start, the first of 9 pickups and the last drop off. It added over 2 hours to a long day and was a big negative - more than half the day was spent on the bus. Separate North vs South Hammamet pickups. Also say that men and women can borrow long gowns.

Travel time was very long, and even when we did get to the location the tour guide told us a time to be back. But by the time he had finished talking it was time to leave and didn’t have time to explore

The trip went on for 3 hours longer than advertised. The trip was a little too information heavy. No opportunity to get breakfast or a little coffee in the morning. Lunch was fine but no soft drinks included, not even water, which you had to pay extra for. The museum trip at the end, while beautiful, was an unnecessary addition to an already long day. El Jem colosseum was spectacular - we would have liked to have just visited there.
