El Jem Colosseum Tour with Pirate Boat Cruise

3.6/5
37 reviews

Prepare for an adventure that takes in Tunisia's Roman roots and pirate past. You'll visit an amphitheatre to rival that of Rome with a tour of El Jem – an ancient colosseum where gladiator games once took place. Then, take to the waves for a swashbuckling afternoon at sea that includes swim stops, lunch and snacks aboard a replica pirate galley.

This UNESCO World-Heritage site of El Jem is soaked in history. You'll be captivated by its stone-cut walls, fine-tuned archways and three-floor facade, a testament of glory to what was the Roman Empire. Take a seat in the age-old stadium and admire the arena below, just like they did in times gone by.

Then, we'll cast off from Monastir harbour into the Mediterranean, just as the Barbary pirates did for centuries. But while they struck fear into European coastal communities as far afield as Iceland, we'll be going out to have wholehearted fun. There'll be stops to dive into the sea for swimming and plenty of time to dry off on-board while chillin' with water drinks and munching on snacks.

Great mix for adults and children- 16,14 and 8. The tour guide was very knowledgable. The bus driver was considerate and drove safely. The pirate ship was great fun, the food was lovely and everyone enjoyed jumping off the ship into the sea. The dancing was really fun. Lots of coach time but it was worth it.

Unfortunately we went on one of the last boat tours of the season. There was no vibe at all and to be honest I was expecting some fun . We have been on similar in Turkey and even when quiet there is a pirate show etc

Pirate boat was really disappointing, the only thing piratey about it was the shape of the boat. ‘Entertainment’ was cringey and involved the crew doing the standard holiday dances, which no one really got involved with (this is a no alcohol trip & I think a few drinks may have changed participation - not an excuse, just an observation). Been on a few of the ‘pirate’ cruises and they’ve all been really good fun, with the crew doing an actual show (comedy), swords etc so was expecting the same

Safety wise, no safety belts in our minibus. The timing of the day was not that well explained, it was a good day but a long day. The gladiators part was interesting, but a long way to travel 1hour 40 mins to get there. The pirate boat was brilliant, the staff on board worked really hard to entertain, which they did do in spades and would highly recommend it. Again journey back was quite long at 1hour 30. Timing was not explained well

I enjoyed the tour a lot. Was such a hot day and everyone ran out of water and it was warm. My only suggestion would be maybe a cool box of water taken on the trip to give to people after the gladiator tour

We were told this trip was 4-8 hours when in fact we were out of the hotel for 11. 8 hours of which was sat on a coach with no toilet facilities for. The tour of the colosseum was only 1 hour but it felt like no time to look around at all. The food on the ship wasn't too bad but most of the 2 hours we spent on board was sat in the dock eating. We were also told that there was 2; swimming stops but only stopped once and barely had time to get life jackets on the kids before we were told to getout
