From volcano hikes to sea views: things to do in Lanzarote

Lanzarote is one of the most striking Canary Islands, renowned for the volcanic landscapes of Timanfaya National Park, lava caves, the vineyards of La Geria, and attractions designed by César Manrique. Below, we have gathered six of our favourite experiences, tours, and excursions that you can book directly on this page.

Six things to see do in Lanzarote

1. Go for a hike in Timanfaya National Park

If you visit only one place in Lanzarote, make sure it's Timanfaya National Park. With its spectacular volcanic landscapes and its whimsical rock formations, you’ll feel as though you’re on the moon. To understand its history, let a guide take you along the park’s trails surrounded by craters, vast lava fields, and scenic viewpoints, as Timanfaya reveals its true, wild spirit.

2. Discover the Jameos del Agua Caves

Jameos del Agua, designed by the iconic local artist and architect César Manrique, is a must-see attraction when visiting Lanzarote. This unique space comprises an underground system of tunnels and collapsed lava tubes. Inside, you’ll find a perfect blend of art and nature, with a huge auditorium hosting concerts and events, an underground lake and picturesque spots that perfectly showcase Manrique's vision.

3. Shop for souvenirs at Teguise market

Taking place every Sunday for the past 600 years, this open-air market is one of the largest in the Canary Islands Located in the heart of Teguise's historic centre, and with over 400 stalls to see, you'll find everything from local handicrafts and clothing to jewellery, and traditional cuisine. It's the ideal place to buy souvenirs and keepsakes before heading home.

4. Visit the Green Caves

La Cueva de los Verdes – or the Green Caves – are located along the same underground stretch as Jameos del Agua. At almost eight kilometres long, they once served as a hidden shelter from pirates. These days, guided tours allow visitors to explore this fascinating cave system and learn more about the island's geological history.

5. Try the wine from La Geria

The La Geria wine region is famous for its distinctive vineyards. Here, vines grow in small pits sheltered by semicircular stone walls, creating a truly unique landscape. There’s plenty of guided tours available, with many including a stop at a winery where you can enjoy a wine tasting.

6. Admire the view from the Mirador del Río

Located in the north of Lanzarote, the Mirador del Río is one of the island’s most spectacular viewpoints. Designed by César Manrique and integrated into the volcanic rock, it overlooks the stretch of sea separating Lanzarote from La Graciosa. From the large windows and the terrace, you can admire the Chinijo Archipelago, with its cliffs, ocean, and seemingly endless landscapes.

Plan your visit to Lanzarote

Spring and autumn are the best times to visit Lanzarote. The weather is warm but not too hot, and – especially in October and November – you can find excellent deals.

Winter is also pleasant, though the island can get more crowded during the holiday season.

You need at least three or four days on the island. This amount of time allows you to visit Lanzarote's main attractions, including Timanfaya National Park and the works of César Manrique. We recommend staying for seven days so you have time to relax on one of the many beaches and perhaps visit nearby islands, such as La Graciosa.

The most famous beaches are located in the south of the island, where the sea is generally calmer and ideal for relaxation. In this area – particularly around Playa Blanca – you will find some of Lanzarote’s most beautiful bays, such as the beaches of Papagayo, Playa Mujeres, and Playa Dorada.

If, on the other hand, you’re looking for waves and wilder scenery, Famara is one of the best areas for surfing and watersports.

Timanfaya National Park, Jameos del Agua, Cueva de los Verdes, and Mirador del Río are among the must-see attractions. If you have time, also include a stop at La Geria, a walk in Teguise, and a day at the Papagayo beaches.

Lanzarote is famous above all for its volcanic landscapes, spectacular beaches, and the bond between art and nature created by César Manrique.

For an adult getaway, you can mix volcano excursions, wine tasting in La Geria, and visits to César Manrique’s works with outdoor activities like hiking, surfing, or boat trips. A scenic dinner or an evening at Jameos del Agua are also excellent options.

The most popular excursions in Lanzarote include:

Teguise is often considered one of the most beautiful towns in Lanzarote, thanks to its historic centre, white houses, and famous Sunday market. Haría and Yaiza are also worth a visit if you're looking for small, picturesque villages.

It depends on the type of trip you’re looking for. Lanzarote is smaller and wilder, featuring spectacular volcanic landscapes, dramatic beaches, and architecture that blends into the natural surroundings. Tenerife is larger and more diverse, offering cities, nightlife, mountains, and more developed resorts.

Choose Lanzarote if you’re looking for nature, tranquillity, and unique landscapes; choose Tenerife if you want more variety and amenities.
