Spirit of the Maroons cultural tour with lunch in Jamaica

4.3/5
29 reviews

Your journey through Jamaica's north will unveil the culture and history of the island. You'll visit the Charles Town Maroon Museum to learn about the Maroons' struggle for freedom, enjoy a tasty lunch and stroll through Sun Valley farming estate to sample fresh fruits and vegetables. Jada, one of our expert local guides, says "the Jamaican Maroons have a proud and fascinating heritage. They are descendants of enslaved West Africans who escaped from plantations and created communities known as Maroon Towns. These communities preserved their African roots – the Maroon culture is known for vibrant music, dance, storytelling, herbal medicine, and cuisine."

Our first stop is at Sun Valley Plantation, a cute little farm where you'll stroll through gardens to look at tropical flowers and taste some of the fruits and vegetables that're grown here. You'll also see how the locals have farmed here for generations. Afterwards, you'll head to the Charles Town Basic School, a small school at the heart of the Charles Town Maroon community. Then, you'll visit the Charles Town Maroon Museum – home to a wealth of artifacts, including traditional clothing, weaponry, and musical instruments. You'll learn about the Maroons' long struggle for freedom and their important role in Jamaica's history.

Next, it's time to sit down for lunch, which will have you eating like a local thanks to all the traditional Jamaican dishes on the menu. You'll dine in a laidback spot overlooking the coast.

My sister and I enjoyed the dancing, and the history of the Maroons, I’m not sure if the dancing usually takes place in the museum as there was not a lot of room for everyone to take part in the dancing maybe have it in the courtyard, this may not have happened due to it raining, but overall a lovely experience. Thank you

I enjoyed every single moment from when Donna and Mr D picked me up. Their warmth, passion, knowledge, personalities was brilliant from start to finish. The only thing I didn't like was having to end the trip!

First off this is three trips in one. The first stop is the plantation which was absolutely amazing. Very informative and the host was lovely. 2nd stop is about 10 minutes ride away. Which is to the school..which again was very nice although it felt we interrupted the school day. The children looked pleased to see us. Stop 3! Another 10 minutes on the bus and the food wasn't that great tbh. Summary; make this a half day to plantation and charge less! Or full day and give % to school!

Lorna, from the Sun Valley plantation, was very knowledgeable and insightful about the plants and fruits located there. Particularly their medicinal and natural remedies. The Maroon Village was very interesting about their history.
