Bolzano and Renon tour with panoramic train ride

4.2/5
281 reviews

South Tyrol is the most un-Italian part of Italy. It's not just the Alpine location that sets it apart but its languages, architecture and culture. This excursion mixes the best of both worlds with time in the regional capital, Bolzano, and scenery-rich train ride through the Renon plateau. Martin, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The railway was first opened in 1907, and originally incorporated a cog section ascending 1000 metres from Bolzano, but in 1966 that section was replaced by the original cablecar.'

Bolzano, or Bozen as German-speaking locals call it, is the elegant and prosperous capital of South Tyrol. With your free time in the city you could visit the Gothic cathedral, take a walk along the Talvera Promenade for views of the mountains from the riverside, or you can stroll the handsome streets and piazzas of the city, browse the shops and try some local specialities like apple strudel.

And on the next leg of the trip, you'll hop into a cable car in Bolzano and ascend to the Renon plateau in a matter of minutes. Then it's time for the narrow-gauge train journey though pastoral landscapes and pretty villages. A 20-minute walk away through nature are the plateau's famous earth pyramids – well worth checking out, though worth noting it's around a kilometre walk slightly uphill. These bizarre pillars can reach heights of up to 30 metres, and while one pyramid vanishes, further up the same slope, nature is already forming a new one.

Fantastic scenery even on bus, tour guide amazing, could have stayed longer in Bolzano but pick up was late possibly traffic. Restaurant at stop for dolomites was lovely too.

An excellent day and a good guide to inform us of the areas and places visited. We didn’t have long enough in Bolszano so an extra hour would have been perfect.

We particularly enjoyed the cable car, time in Bolzano and the interesting information about the region the guide shared with us all.

The guide was excellent very informative and friendly .Interesting places visited just felt we didn’t need the restaurant booked after the train experience as late for lunch and made the day very long getting back to the hotel at 7.30. Would recommend the trip though.

Great sightseeing up in the mountains, guide Frederick was very nice, friendly and informative throughout the day. It was lovely in Bolzano it has history lots of bars and shops, slow paced day then cable car ride to Renon then long wait for train plenty of seats amazing views but nothing to do in Renon just food in one restaurant (not the best) then back on the coach. Too much time on the bus 3.5 hours each way, probably could have done this trip ourselves quicker by public transport or car.

The guide was friendly and knowledgeable. The free time in Bolzano was nice as it meant we could explore as we liked rather than walk round in the group of 50+. The cable car was excellent and we had fantastic views, similarly the panoramic train was good and most of our group got a seat on the train. Personally, the stop for lunch at a hotel followed by another small walk after could have been left off to make the day shorter as it ended up being a 12+ hour day with travel time.
