Olympia archeological site day trip from Zante

4.6/5
178 reviews

The birthplace of the Olympic Games is just a short hop across the Ionian Sea on mainland Greece. Catch the ferry over from Zante and head to ancient Olympia for a journey through the centuries. You'll also visit the fascinating Archaeological Museum. Konstantina, one of our guides, says, ‘Olympia has been standing there for more than 2,500 years, still inspiring as a must-stop on the way to a personal Odyssey. To wander around its ruins and to feel the connection with the past is a special feeling.'

After docking at Kyllini, we'll drive through the ‘garden of Greece' – fields of tomatoes, melons and cotton – to one of the most important sanctuaries of antiquity. Alongside a licenced Olympia guide and our own local expert, you'll discover where the Olympic Games began in the 8th century BC. See the remains of the stadium where 45,000 spectators cheered on their favourite athletes, including the finishing line and waterside gym. What's more, you'll get a QR code for your mobile, allowing you to visualise how these remarkable ruins once looked.

You'll also see the ruins of the Temple of Hera, where the Olympic flame was first lit, and of the Temple of Zeus. It was here that the statue of Zeus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, once stood. Afterwards, head to the superb Archaeological Museum to see its collection of statues and bronzes. Finally, head into Olympia town, where you'll have time for lunch and a poke around the souvenir shops.

Guide was excellent, informative, caring and attentive to our needs. The archeological guide was superb, her knowledge and deep understanding of the site and its extensive history was outstanding. Plenty of free time to investigate and get lunch. Travelling from the start to completion, including ferry travel great. Overall no complaints what so ever.

I think the free time can be less. It is tiresome to be out all day

A really smoothly planned and coordinated day with lots of modes of travel. I would have liked a longer browsing time in the museum as we missed some of the artefacts and would have liked to have gone back but the entrance was chained off. It was very busy with lots of cruise ship trips in, so we had to keep moving. Our guide dealt with it really well, but it was a shame she didn’t accompany us into the stadium as I’m sure she would have been able to answer all our questions. Great day though.

Feedback from our group was that it was a great day enjoyed by everyone even though it was a long tiring day. Quite expensive when paying for 6 especially as children over 12 charged adult price while TUi treat 17 year olds as children when booking the holiday?
