Samaria Gorge Tour

4.5/5
584 reviews

Those walking boots will get a good workout during this hike through the Samaria Gorge. This 16km-long ravine is the longest in Europe. So it's a serious – but spectacular – five to six-hour trek that's not for the unfit or faint-hearted.

You'll start by driving through the White Mountains to your starting point – the Xyloskalo staircase, which zigzags some 200 metres down into the gorge. You'll pass tiny chapels, walk between the high ravine walls and maybe spot some of Crete's wild ‘kri-kri' goats. The highlight though, is the ‘Iron Gates' – the narrowest section of the gorge where the 300-metre-high walls stand just 3 metres apart.

At the end, you'll reach the seaside village of Agia Roumeli, where if you've made good time, you can take a swim or relax in a taverna. Then, when everyone's ready, you'll catch a boat along the coast to where your coach awaits. Great for outdoor types.

The guide (Katarina) was excellent, provided expert knowledge of the gorge and provided good timings for the day so you got to fully enjoy the gorge and make it to the end for the last ferry.

The scenery is absolutely astonishing....the path through the gorge is wonderful...the only minus was the heat ...but this was compensated with a plunge in the refreshing sea water at the end of the hiking trail + the 2 cold and sweating beers

More information might help some people on the fitness level required. The ground to navigate with the stones and boulders was a lot harder than I had realised. Be prepared for muscle ache in the legs for 2 to 3 days afterwards. Overall the hike was enjoyable and rewarding.

Absolutely amazing experience. Glad it was possible to experience the Samaria Gorge using a Tour Guide as you knew what to expect regarding timings etc., our guide gave us some really good advice and information. This has been one of the best experiences of our lives. So glad my teenage children were able to enjoy it.

We have rated this trip 0 as we had to cancel on the morning of the trip as our daughter had become ill over night. We were advised that we would lose the total cost of the trip even though it is advised that all trip members must be fit to walk 8 hours. We had no way of knowing 24 hours before that she would be ill. We requested that we might change to Wednesday as we had paid over £200 for services not rendered. We were told no- perhaps we should have gone and our daughter faint in the gorge.
