Ancient Luxor tour with solar eclipse of the century from Sharm

The universe really knows how to put on a show, and the sandstone landscape of Luxor is one of the best spots in the world to see this headline act. On 2 August, the rare total solar eclipse will cast the ancient Egyptian temples and monuments into darkness for around six minutes. Local guide Ayoub explains, “This is going to be the solar eclipse of the century, and there’s no setting more magical for it. Get ready for history and the cosmos to come together in perfect harmony.”

It’s an early start to catch a short flight from the Red Sea resorts of Sharm to the ancient city on the Nile. Luxor Temple is your first stop, where its parade of soaring columns, towering walls and grand statues sets the tone for the day. It’s on to the Alley of the Sphinxes next, where the sky steals the spotlight. Expect a buzz of excited anticipation bubbling through the crowd as the solar glasses are handed out. Then look up to see the moon glide across the sun, casting an otherworldly twilight across the monuments. Ayoub reassuringly adds, “Luxor’s desert climate means there’s little chance of pesky clouds spoiling your view of this spectacular celestial event.

Tuck into lunch, then take a motorboat to the west bank of the Nile and snap photos of the mighty Colossi of Memnon, who have stood watch over ancient Thebes for thousands of years. The Valley of the Kings is next to explore, where you can enter three royal tombs and learn about the legacy and beliefs of the ancient pharaohs. Head to the cliffs of Deir el-Bahari to wrap up your tour at the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, which was built for one of Egypt’s rare female leaders around 3,500 years ago. After a full-on day of history and natural wonder, your guide will take you to the airport to catch your 90-minute flight back to Sharm.
