Tunisian Sahara two-day film set tour from Sousse

4.3/5
343 reviews

Imagine a place where the sands of the desert have been touched by the magic of Hollywood stardust. You've found it with this two-day tour, which'll show you some of Tunisia's most famous film locations. You'll visit a Roman amphitheatre, explore underground cave homes, cross a vast salt lake and discover a legendary film set on the fringes of the Sahara. Hamdi, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Between Matmata and Douz, there are endless "ergs" – sand dunes – in the restless desert. This desert is not a dead entity, it's even cultivated in places by those who inhabit it. The sands come alive according to the seasons.'

Embark on your sandy adventure at El Djem Amphitheatre. One of the best-preserved Roman arenas in the world, this UNESCO World Heritage Site was featured in Gladiator and once held crowds of 35,000 spectators for gladiatorial contests. You'll then head to Matmata, where you'll have lunch and visit the underground cave homes that starred as Luke Skywalker's home in the Star Wars saga. Finish the day in the oasis town of Douz, known as the gateway to the Sahara, for an overnight stay. This is a great spot to take an optional camel or carriage ride in the desert.

After breakfast, you'll cross Chott el Jerid, Tunisia's largest salt lake, where shimmering white salt crystals create a surreal landscape. Then, jump into a 4x4 for a ride to Onk Jemal, where you'll discover the Star Wars film set city still standing among the desert dunes. After lunch in Gafsa, you'll round off the tour with a photo stop overlooking Kairouan's Great Mosque, where you can admire the distinctive skyline of one of Islam's holiest cities.

We really enjoyed the experience but we find the Tui excursions a bit pricey.

The camel ride across the Sahara Desert was fantastic especially as we got to see the sunset.

Have taken this trip several years ago and really enjoyed it, was just as good this time and liked the extra stop at camel mountain when out in the jeep, the experience at the hotel where Luke Skywalker lived with his relatives has been spoiled with the edition of badly painted characters from the film around the site, making it look cheap and tacky and spoiling the overall effect of the site, other than that it is a great trip and value for money.

The guide mohammed would start talking on the microphone about the facts and history of the tour and then would stop and start talking to the people without the microphone as a profoundly deaf person this effected me significantly as I didn't get the full story's and facts I did tell the guide that I was deaf but unfortunately nothing was done. not very disabled friendly. Also the hotel you stay in is a sweat box the Aircon doesn't work it really should for a 4 star hotel.

Overall, great tour, value for money, good way of seeing more of the southern part of Tunisia. However, I mainly went on it to see Star Wars New Hope sets, and if you solely want to see these sets this tour is not for you. You will need to find a specialist tour group to take you solely to places such as Lars Homestead Exterior (Chott el Jerid / Chott el Gharsa) and Sidi Bouhlel / Midès Canyons, where the Sand people/Jawas filmed. Guide and driver great. Son enjoyed it as I did. Camel ride/4x4👍

Loved all the experiences. Long hours on the coach were expected and excellent air conditioning on the coach made it bearable and the experiences were worth it! Would have liked a little more time at el Jem as that felt a bit rushed. An even more detailed itinerary in advance would have been helpful. We bought scarves for our camel ride by el Jem only to find that we were taken to a place to buy them more cheaply later in the day. Shame we didn’t know as they were better quality too! Awesome tho
