Mahdia and Monastir full-day tour with lunch at a farm

3.7/5
31 reviews

Two of Tunisia's coastal cities will centre stage on this full day tour, which includes a lunch of local specialities at a country farm. Explore Monastir first, then delve into the whitewashed medina of Mahdia. Fatima, one of our expert local guides, says ‘To enter the historic centre of Mahdia, you pass through an ancient gate, Skifa Kahla, which is 33 metres tall. The name means “black gate” and it has stood here since 916, when it was constructed as part of the fortress surrounding the original town. It is of great historical importance.'

Your first stop is the elaborate Bourguiba mausoleum in Monastir. This grand, golden-domed structure is the resting place of Tunisia's first president Habib Bourguiba, also known as the father of Tunisian independence, and was built to his own design during his lifetime. Inside, you'll see some of his possessions – his desk, books and even his spectacles – preserved in his memory. You'll also catch a glimpse of the seafront Ribat fortress, built in the 8th century during the Abbasid Caliphate.

Drive along the Mediterranean coast to Mahdia, where you'll see cultural highlights such as the ancient El Kebir fortress. Perched on the highest point of the peninsula, you can admire fantastic bird's-eye views of the surrounding area. Next up is the spice-scented medina. Sip on an Arabic coffee as you soak up the atmosphere. Round off the experience with a typical Tunisian lunch served at a rustic farm, freshly prepared with local ingredients.

The trip was excellent. Very informative. I thought the choice on included lunch could improve a little bit.

Disorganised, turned up to mausoleum before it was open. Very small medina and nothing much to see. In 8 hours, only a visit to mausoleum, small medina and Fort then lunch at the end. Lunch was good but olive oil overpriced, especially compared with what Alladin had advised. Overall very disappointing.

Guide knew lots of information and very friendly. More information on the timings of the day would have been helpful as about half of time was travelling which I was not expecting. Did not like being dropped in the medina as a single woman travelling and told to meet at bus later, I felt very vulnerable as not aware that was happening. Historic sites were great. Fish and meat markets were an acquired taste and smell. Restaurant had lovely food and lots of it. Fixed menu.
