Luquina is a small village on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the world's highest navigable lake, straddling the border of Peru and Bolivia. This three-day trip takes you from Puno into that community for two nights with a local family. You'll eat home-cooked meals made from regional ingredients, cruise out to the Uros Floating Islands and Taquile Island, and end your second evening with traditional Andean dances and a bonfire by the lake.

You sleep in a family home in Luquina, not a hotel. Your hosts prepare traditional dinners with fresh regional produce, and the rhythm of the household becomes yours for two nights. On the second evening, the community puts on a cultural show with traditional dances, followed by a bonfire under the sky. The village sits right on the lakeside, and the quiet here is total once the fire burns down.

You're picked up from your accommodation in Puno and driven to the village of Luquina on the shores of Lake Titicaca. On arrival, you'll meet your host family and settle into your homestay. The evening brings your first taste of lakeside family life. A traditional dinner is prepared with fresh regional ingredients, and you get your first sense of the community and the pace of life here before bedding down for the night.

After breakfast, you board a boat and cruise across Lake Titicaca to the Uros Floating Islands. These man-made platforms are woven from totora reeds and are home to Indigenous communities, who live, fish and sell handmade textiles here. Community members guide you through their customs and way of life. From Uros, you continue to Taquile Island with its terraced hillsides and Andean farming traditions. After lunch on the island, you'll head back to Luquina for a home-cooked dinner. The evening finishes with a cultural show featuring traditional Andean dances performed by the community, followed by a bonfire.

After your final breakfast with your host family, you say goodbye to the Luquina community and drive back to Puno.

You'll skip two nights at your Puno hotel. Let your reception know you'll be away. There's no need to cancel your booking. You'll be driven back to Puno on day 3.

The dry season from May to October is the most comfortable time to visit Lake Titicaca. Days are sunny and cold, with clear skies that are ideal for the boat tour. The wet season from November to March brings afternoon rain but fewer visitors. Pack warm layers for all seasons at this altitude.

No special fitness is needed. Transport is vehicle and boat-based. Walking is limited to the islands and the village itself. Taquile Island has some uphill paths with terraced hillsides. The altitude at Lake Titicaca is about 3,800 metres, so take it slowly if you're not acclimatised.
