Guided high-altitude hike to Mount Chaberton from Claviere

This guided trek takes you to one of the most recognisable peaks in the Alps, where history and high‑mountain landscapes meet at over 3,000 metres. Mount Chaberton is a striking presence on the Alpine skyline, known for its unique position between Italy and France and for the eight stone towers that crown its summit.

The hike begins in Claviere, following the route through the Rio Secco valley towards the Colle dello Chaberton at 2,674 metres. From here, the path continues along the old military road, climbing steadily through a series of wide switchbacks until reaching the summit plateau at 3,131 metres.

At the top, you'll have time to explore the remains of what was once the highest armoured battery in Europe, constructed between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Your hiking guide will explain how soldiers lived and worked at this extreme altitude, as well as the strategic importance of the fort during World War II, including the events leading up to the French bombardment of June 1940.

From the summit, the panorama stretches across much of the Alpine arc, with views reaching from Monviso to the Écrins and from the Vanoise Massif to the Guglie di Valle Stretta. Along the way, you may also encounter high‑altitude wildlife such as ibex or golden eagles, which are often seen among the scree slopes and limestone cliffs of the area.
