Ancient Kourion tour with Paphos Harbour visit

4.3/5
524 reviews

Cyprus is home to some hugely important ancient Greek and Roman sites. On this tour, you'll take in Aphrodite's Rock, ancient Paphos and the Tombs of the Kings, visit Kourion – and enjoy free time in the Paphos harbour area. Andreas, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The Tombs of the Kings offer us a valuable insight into ancient Mediterranean culture. There are very similar tombs in Alexandria, demonstrating the strong ties between the two cities in ancient times.'

After a coffee pit-stop along the way, you'll stop by Kourion archaeological site to see landmarks such as the theatre – dating from the 2nd century BC – and the Agora. En route to Paphos, there's a photo stop at Petra tou Romiou – or Aphrodite's Rock – where, legend has it, the ancient Greek goddess of love and beauty emerged from the sea foam. Andreas says, ‘At Kourion, you see the ruined house of Eustolios and find out what life was like here before the city was destroyed by an earthquake in the 4th century.'

Next, we'll head to ancient Paphos for a guided visit of the Tombs of the Kings, the House of Dionysos and its well-preserved mosaics. Andreas says, ‘The rock-hewn Tombs of the Kings were not actually intended for royalty, but instead the aristocracy and island governors were laid to rest here. The name reflects the sheer grandeur of the necropolis.' Later, you'll enjoy some free time to shop and wander around Paphos Harbour. Maybe you can stroll along the waterfront or grab a bite to eat at one of the many terrace cafés.

Really enjoyed all the sites and the guide (Chara - I believe that’s how you spell her name) was very knowledgeable and friendly. Would have been nice to include some shopping time but understand it was a long day - for us especially as we were the first on, last off the bus.

Lots packed into the trip. Spectacular views and history. Not too long spent at each stop so the day was broken up nicely. However, the stop at the Tombs was very short with only 20 minutes to explore so we didn’t get to see all of the tombs. Paphos was beautiful. We had a lovely lunch by the sea. Again, only a short time of an hour which was only enough time to eat. Much needed by 2:30! Water is a must as it’s hot and very dusty. Bring your own as only one stop with water available to buy.

Bus was late as u had seen on previous reviews so that was disappointing, the tour guide was good every stop was explained and we were shown the most important parts when we got to the last stop at paphos harbour it was too hot so we saw the main mosaic but then left the group to do paphos harbour as we would of only had an hour if not so this gave us nearly 2 hours to walk around do the shops grab a drink ice cream etc could have definitely done with more time at paphos harbour good trip though
