Kvarner Bay tour with Opatija, Lovran and Croatian specialties

4.4/5
38 reviews

The coastline of Kvarner Bay is peppered with beautiful towns and historic locations. On this tour, you'll visit two of its most eye-catching spots – the pretty coastal village of Lovran and the cosmopolitan seaside resort of Opatija. Josip, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Known for its pastel-coloured villas and botanical gardens, Opatija was the place to be seen in the Austro-Hungarian Empire's golden age. Take a stroll along the Lungomare in the footsteps of many kings and emperors from the olden days.'

First up, we'll visit pretty Lovran. There's free time to explore the narrow streets and churches in the old quarter. Lovran developed as a tourist destination in the late 19th century, when several grand hotels and secessionist villas sprang up. It was one of the top resorts in what was then known as the Austrian Riviera. Wander around the vegetation-fringed old town, see the tiny marina and enjoy a tasting of local specialities accompanied by traditional live music.

Next up is the elegant resort of Opatija. It was a simple fishing village, until the aristocracy arrived in the mid-19th century and began building opulent villas and hosting royalty for winter holidays, to take the mild sea air. Today, the historic grandeur is still evident. Josip says, ‘Soak up the regal atmosphere in the Park Angiolina, which surrounds the first holiday villa built here, or on the seaside promenade. Take some time to browse the market, too, where you can get a flavour of local life.'

Mauro our guide was brilliant, great knowledge & the places we went were a different side of Istria. We fully intended seeing more of Croatia seeing as it was our first visit & we certainly did that

Mauro the guide was exceptionally knowledgeable with the history of the istrian peninsula and it was great listening to the history and his own life growing up in istria. Boris the driver was also great as his knowledge of the places we visited and of the roads was great

Nice day, the guide was also knowledgable and quiet interesting but his voice was too quiet on the coach so we could not hear what he was saying. Maybe that was the microphone.

We were looking forward to the tour. However the guide was very difficult to understand. The first vista stop you could not see much and whilst the second stop in Lovran was OKish the one in Opatija was not. We had to walk quite a distance and we were given little time to to see it. It would have been a lot better if we could have been dropped off in the town and given free time. It needs re-thinking as other trips we have been on with TUI have been excellent.

We enjoyed both Lovran and Opatija but felt you did not have much time in Lovran and therefore the stop we made before getting there could have been missed and more time spent in Lovran. Our guide was very knowledgeable and helpful. We enjoyed the tastings in the shop that had opened especially for us as it was a feast day and all the shops were closed. We know it was a holiday but was surprised so many shops were shut.
