Sarapiquí lies in Costa Rica's northeast lowlands, where rainforest stretches towards the Nicaraguan border. This three-day trip combines two nights at a jungle lodge with a guided night walk through La Tirimbina's rainforest and a morning of class II-III white water rafting on the Sarapiquí River. Between activities, you can spot butterflies, hummingbirds and tropical plants throughout the lodge grounds.

What makes the night special

Set among the rainforest, your lodge is the starting point for a guided evening walk on your first night. Over two hours, a naturalist guide helps you spot the wildlife that only appears after dark. Back at the lodge, the sounds of the forest provide the backdrop to your evening. With two nights here, you'll have a full day to enjoy the surroundings between adventures.

You're picked up from your San José hotel or Juan Santamaria International Airport and transferred to the Sarapiquí region. Once at the lodge, you have free time to walk the grounds. Butterflies, hummingbirds and tropical plants are everywhere. As dusk falls, it's time to see the rainforest from a different perspective. A naturalist guide leads a two-hour walk through the forest at La Tirimbina, pointing out the nocturnal wildlife that emerges after dark and revealing a side of the jungle that's rarely seen by day.

After breakfast at the lodge, you head to the river for class II-III white water rafting. Professional guides fit you with safety gear and run through instructions before you launch. The 2.5-hour ride takes you through rapids surrounded by rainforest and wildlife on both banks. Halfway through, you stop for fresh tropical fruit and a chance to swim or cliff-jump. After the rafting, a traditional lunch is served at riverside facilities before you transfer back to the lodge for the rest of the afternoon.

After breakfast at the lodge, you check out and transfer to your hotel in San José, ready to continue your Costa Rica adventure.

The rafting is guided by professionals who provide safety gear and full instructions before launch. Class II-III rapids are considered intermediate. No infants under 2 years are allowed.

You'll skip two nights at your San José hotel. Let reception know you'll be away. There's no need to cancel your booking. You'll be transferred back to your San José hotel on day 3.

The price covers roundtrip transport from San Jose, two nights' accommodation, two breakfasts (days 2 and 3), a tropical fruit buffet (day 2), and one traditional lunch (day 2). The guided night walk at La Tirimbina and class III rafting with professional guides are also included. Not covered: dinner on both nights, drinks, flights, and travel insurance. At checkout, you'll choose between Standard (La Quinta Sarapiqui or similar 3*) and Superior (Sarapiqui Rainforest Lodge or similar 4*).

Sarapiqui is accessible year-round. The driest months are February to April and September to October. Rain can fall any time in the lowland jungle, but rafting runs regardless of weather. Pack quick-dry clothing and a waterproof jacket for all seasons.

Moderate fitness is helpful. The rafting section covers class II-III rapids over 2.5 hours and involves paddling. Cliff-jumping is optional. The night walk is a two-hour forest trail at a gentle pace. You'll need comfortable hiking shoes and quick-dry clothing. No infants under 2 are allowed.
