Head to one of Sal's premier riding schools, where you'll be paired up with your trusty steed, given your helmet and taken to either the expanses of the salt pans or a wide sweeping beach. Let the fresh air fill your nostrils as you settle into the soothing rhythm of well-trained horse – taking in the unspoilt scenery as you amble along.

This experience would have been 10/10 except for the fact that I didn’t actually ride a horse. Myself and another women’s horses were led the whole way by guides. Then men and children though were able to ride. So that was disappointing. The guides, the horses and the views were great but I wanted to ride and not be led.

Our guide Ziggy was friendly. Our horses were selected based on ability and were as safe as horses come. It was clear the horses were well looked after with well fitting tack. It was a really enjoyable ride. The experience was advertised as a guided tour but there wasn’t much explanation from the guide during the ride - this didn’t bother us as our main intention was to enjoy the riding, but if you are expecting facts and history about the salt pans you might be disappointed!

We then rode along a beach very very controlled then turned around and did the same back. I rode last year in Boa Vista and the experience was amazing. So much so I rode again the day after.
