Sleeping aboard the trimaran at anchor is a world away from a hotel night. The boat rests in a sheltered bay surrounded by dark water and island silhouettes, with small waves gently tapping the hull. After a day of sailing and snorkelling, enjoy dinner on deck before settling into your bunk or private double below. Wake to a Whitsunday sunrise through the porthole, with clear reef waters just metres away.

Meet at Coral Sea Marina in Airlie Beach and board Avatar, the high-speed trimaran that will be your home for the next two nights. Sail into the Whitsunday Islands, part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, with the route depending on conditions. Stops may include Whitehaven Beach, Hook Island, Hayman Island, Border Island or Whitsunday Island, with opportunities to snorkel at sites such as Luncheon Bay, Caves Cove and Blue Pearl Bay. Snorkelling gear and wetsuits are provided, while fresh meals and snacks are served throughout the day. Between stops, relax on the deck nets or spacious sun deck.

The second day continues with more sailing, snorkelling and island time. The crew chooses stops based on wind and tide, aiming for the clearest water and best reef visibility. Fresh meals are served onboard again, from tacos and spaghetti bolognese to salads and fruit. Between swims there is time to stretch out on deck, chat with fellow travellers or watch the islands drift past. As evening falls, the boat anchors in a sheltered bay and the group gathers for dinner with the sun setting over the water.

Yes. Avatar is operated by OzSail Whitsundays, an established sailing company based in Airlie Beach. The trimaran is a certified commercial vessel with a professional crew onboard at all times. Sailing takes place within the sheltered waters of the Whitsunday Islands, inside the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Snorkelling gear including wetsuits is provided and the crew briefs guests before each water activity.

You will be away from your Airlie Beach accommodation for two nights. Let your hotel know you will be away. There is no need to cancel your booking. Both nights are spent sleeping onboard the trimaran at anchor in a sheltered bay. You return to Coral Sea Marina in Airlie Beach at the end of the trip.

The trip includes two nights onboard the trimaran, all meals freshly prepared by the crew (breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks throughout), snorkelling equipment and wetsuits, and all sailing and island stops. The meeting point is Coral Sea Marina in Airlie Beach. Alcoholic drinks and personal items are not included. No large backpacks or suitcases are allowed onboard — only airline carry-on sized bags.

The Whitsunday Islands are warm year-round, with water temperatures comfortable for snorkelling in all seasons. The driest months are June to October, when skies tend to be clearer and humidity lower. November to April is warmer but brings occasional tropical rain. Sailing operates throughout the year, with routes adjusted to suit conditions.

No particular fitness level is required. The main activities are snorkelling and swimming from the boat, both of which are optional. You should be comfortable climbing a short ladder to board the trimaran and moving around a boat at sea. Participants must be aged 18 to 35.
