Marooned off the southwest coast of Tenerife, the tiny island of La Gomera has a lost-in-time feel. Away from the tourist trail, it's totally unspoilt – think jagged ravines, terraced white villages and pristine forests.

The deep valleys of Gomera's UNESCO-protected Garajonay National Park are home to rare plants, unique to the island. After taking in jaw-dropping scenery, it's on to the historic capital, San Sebastian. Crammed with pastel-coloured houses, this pretty place is knee-deep in history – Columbus sailed from here on his 1492 voyage of discovery.

Also on the agenda is an included Gomeran meal at a quaint country restaurant plus a demonstration of local ‘silbo' whistling, which islanders have used for centuries to send messages across the vast ravines.

Carlos the guide was amazing

This was a brilliant day trip and everything from the Los Cristianos Port onwards went very smoothly. Our guide ensured that everything ran well and there were lots of good photo opportunities. It would have been nice to have more time in San Sebastian. The hotel transfer arrangements were chaotic. There were two buses to get to the port and the shuttle bus at the end took 1.5 hours to get me back when this is usually a 20 minute journey. Just be prepared for a much longer day than expected.

Luckily I took a photo of the instructions as we are in our late 70s. Coach driver left on his own from last pick up point to port, and then on return from port to drop off points.

The scenery and information from our guide was excellent the guide on our trip gave detailed information and descriptions along the way in English, Spanish, German and I think Danish, the included lunch was very well received by all with a starter of local soup, main was a choice of fish or beef and a desert, there was wine and water for the table also included. It is as described a Full Day, we were picked up from our hotel In Puerto de la Cruz at 7am and got dropped off at 8pm.
