Matera Tour with Cave Homes and Local Food Tasting
Excursions & day trips

Brindisi - Matera Tour with Cave Homes and Local Food Tasting

Matera has a lot going for it – it's a UNESCO World Heritage Site, European Capital of Culture 2019 and a cave city dating back over 5,000 years. Tour its historic lanes and ancient cave dwellings, try local Basilicata food and wine, then choose to visit the cave house museum or a rupestrian church. Anna, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The cave houses of Matera were once considered a shameful place to live, best known for poverty, disease and crime. Nowadays, many caves have been transformed into chic homes, restaurants, and hotels.'Considered one of the most outstanding and intact troglodyte settlements, Matera's big draw are the ancient cave dwellings known as ‘sassi', which translates to ‘stones'. First up, we'll check out the baroque quarter, where churches and palaces are built on top of the caves. Next, we'll venture into the Sasso Barisano and Sasso Caveoso areas to see ancient sassi carved into the flanks of Gravina canyon. The dramatic setting overlooking the wild, rocky landscape is all part of the charm. You'll pause for thought in the old quarters, where inhabitants lived in squalor up until the 1950s, which was when the whole population of around 20,000 was rehoused. Wandering around today's visually arresting town, it seems hard to believe how tough life once was here. You'll also get to try typical food and wine at Lucany Restaurant, before choosing between an optional visit to the cave house museum or a rupestrian church, cut into the rock.

Get ready to fall in love with dream destinations and find out the best things to do in Italy.

10 Things to do in Italy

1. Visit the iconic attractions of Rome

The Italian capital is an open-air museum, a must-see for art and history lovers. Visit the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Patheon to delve into the city’s deep-rooted heritage. Don’t miss Vatican City, where you can take in the Renaissance and Baroque architecture of St Peter’s Basilica, stroll through the art galleries of the Vatican Museums, and get a good look at the Sistine Chapel. Stroll through the historic center, check out iconic squares like Piazza Navona and Piazza di Spagna, and, of course, indulge in some local cuisine.

2. Check out Florence’s Renaissance art

Florence is the heart of the Renaissance, with an unmatched art scene. Visit the Uffizi Gallery, where you can check out Botticelli, Raphael and Leonardo da Vinci’s works. Florence Cathedral, with its revolutionary dome designed by Brunelleschi, is an architectural masterpiece you won’t want to miss. Then, wander across the Ponte Vecchio, this bridge dating back to Medieval times, and stop by the historic Boboli Gardens.

3. Navigate the canals of Venice

Venice is a one-of-a-kind city, known for its intricate network of canals, elegant monuments and artisan shops. Start your visit in St Mark’s Square, where you’ll find St Mark’s Basilica and the Campanile. Continue to the Doge’s Palace, home to extravagant interiors and artistic masterpieces. Don’t forget to take a romantic gondola ride along the Grand Canal. If you’re looking for a more authentic experience, head over to the Cannaregio and Dorsoduro districts for some spritz and cicchetti, the cocktail and pre-dinner snacks essential to Venetian aperitivo culture.

4. Discover the history and culture of Naples

Naples, with its ancient culture and traditions, is packed with must-see attractions and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Start by wandering through the historic center, where you’ll find narrow streets and intricately decorated Baroque churches. The National Archaeological Museum is not to be missed, either – it’s home to one of the most significant collections of Roman Art. Don’t miss out on a trip to Mount Vesuvius and check out the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum.

5. Go shopping in Milan

Milan isn’t just the capital of fashion and design, but it’s also brimming with Insta-worthy corners and places to uncover. Start with a visit to the Duomo and climb its terraces for a panoramic view of the city. Then, take a leisurely stroll through the Brera district to see its renowned Pinacoteca. Don't miss a trip to the iconic Teatro alla Scala, and afterward, venture into the modern districts like Citylife and Piazza Gae Aulenti. For shopping, indulge in luxury at the Quadrilatero della Moda or hunt for deals along Buenos Aires and Corso Vittorio Emanuele.

6. Recharge your batteries at Lake Como

With postcard-perfect landscapes and a relaxed atmosphere, Lake Como is a must-see if you’re visiting northern Italy. Here, you’ll find historic villas like Villa Carlotta and Villa del Balbianello as well as the traditional villages of Bellagio and Varenna. Plus, you can cast off on a boat ride on the lake, before savoring the local cuisine at one of the lakeside restaurants. And, if you like walking, you’ll have plenty of mountain hikes and lakeside trails to get stuck into.

7. Stop by the Villages of Cinque Terre

This UNESCO-rated area includes five villages perched on the sea – Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. Hike the panoramic trails that connect the villages, nestled between the sea and mountains, passing through vineyards and perched farmhouses. Be sure to try the local culinary specialties, including pesto and seafood.

8. Take a vacation in Sicily

In Sicily, you can find everything from sandy beaches and archaeological sites to nature excursions and art-filled cities. Visit Palermo, with its lively markets and Baroque churches, the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, one of the most significant archaeological sites in the world, and the Baroque cities of the Val di Noto. Climb Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, and then relax on the beaches of Taormina and Cefalù.

9. Visit the Sassi of Matera

Nestled in a landscape that feels almost otherworldly, Matera is a must-visit on your Italian road trip. Renowned for its Sassi, ancient dwellings carved into the rock dating back to prehistoric times, the historic center of Matera is truly unique, offering a glimpse into Italy's history. Wander through the rock churches, some dating back to the 9th century, and take in the panoramic views of the city from the Belvedere.

10. Experience La Dolce Vita in Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast

Sorrento is the gateway to the Amalfi Coast. Visit Positano, with its colorful houses perched on the sea, Amalfi, with its cathedral and the Cloister of Paradise, and Ravello, famous for its villas and gardens. Take in the views, chat to friendly locals, dive into the waters, and savor some local specialties.
