Serra de Agua Walk

4.4/5
25 reviews

You'll need to have your camera on hand for this easy half-day hike from Campanario in southern Madeira. As you follow the levada across the Serra de Agua, you'll be treated to view after view over the south coast, Encumeada pass and the small town of Ribeira Brava.

With an expert guide to show you the way, you'll only need to worry about capturing the stunning views of Madeira. From Campanario, you'll set off on a two-and-a-half-hour walk along the levada – a network of water channels that zigzag their way from north to south carrying much-needed water. You'll discover one of the most beautiful parts of the Serra de Agua parish as you trace a small section of this 65km-long levada.

Learn all about the flora and fauna as you go and catch sight of the dramatic peaks of Madeira's rugged south coast in the distance as well as the Encumeada pass and Riberia Brava. Along the way you'll spot clouds tumbling down the valley slopes and landscapes that seem too good to be true.

Our guide Tim was excellent and told us lots of interesting info. The walk was easy with just a few places where you had to be careful where little streams crossed the path. We were offered a cafe stop at beginning or end of walk. The majority voted for the end which was good for toilets and a drink. Driver excellent too

It was lovely to get up into the Madeiran mountains and see beautiful scenery. The guide was very informative about local plants, animals and vegetation. The walk was undemanding though a little muddy in places, which we were told to expect, so not a problem. We had sunshine which was a bonus.

Guide was very helpful and informative. Pick your day based on weather if at all possible. If it’s clear you’ll see for miles! Some parts of the route were narrow and slippy when muddy or wet. We did it in trainers but I’d recommend proper walking shoes or ideally boots. Overall I’d recommend this value for money excursion.

Nice & easy walk along the levadas. The group was small enough that you could still hear the guide even at the back. The guide was very good with all the interesting facts she had! We had a warning on TUI about heights but there was no tricky bits at all so suitable even without walking boots. Also TUI said to bring packed lunch but we had a stop at a café with very attractive looking food that we couldn't eat because we brought our own lunch??

Great walk at easy space and stunning views, did the same walk three years ago and loved it. Need warmer clothing and comfortable trainers/walking boots, and waterproof coat. Be aware that the first ten minutes of the walk can be scary for those who don’t like heights (sheer drop on one side but wide path). Not a suitable walk for those with reduced mobility. Experienced hikers may want a more challenging pace. Stopped off for a coffee at the end for a great price of 80 cents, food choice OK
