The uplands behind Funchal provide gentle and panoramic walking trails. This morning walking tour will start at the appropriately named Paradise Valley, trekking along the beautiful Levada Serra do Faial trail, taking in the charming hillside villages of Camacha and Rochão.

Start things off in the traditional village of Camacha, which marks the beginning of the renowned Levada Serra do Faial trail. Follow this gentle walking route, taking in fertile cultivated terraces, lush vegetation and hidden hillside forests. Turn corners en route to be wowed by panoramic views over the south of Madeira and of the villages nestled into the greenness of the hills.

This is a gentle walking tour near Funchal that offers ever-changing views of the rich and beautiful landscape of Paradise Valley and the Levada Serra do Faial, during which you will learn all about the flora and history of the area from your local mountain guide.

This would have been a nice walk if it had gone at a reasonable pace, but the guide stopped too often to talk about the plants and as she was explaining in both German and English this meant we were stood around a lot meaning we got cold. Due to this I wouldn’t recommend this walk.

Excellent guide on a really well organised trip. Our guide was informative and managed to explain the information in English and German. Very impressive knowledge of the area, background and plants. Easy walk with a good pace with a cafe stop half the way round. Mainly flat walk with fabulous views . I took my own walking poles but some walking sticks were available as it was muddy ! Highly recommended
