Madeira Caldeirao Verde & Queimadas Walking Tour

4.5/5
7 reviews

Emerald green landscapes characterise this hike to some of the most remote areas on Madeira. You'll walk along the Caldeirão Verde levada through mystical laurel forests to the spectacular waterfall at the end of the path. With mystifying views over the north coast and more greenery than you could imagine, this walk is not to be missed.

You'll set off on foot with your guide from the Queimadas guesthouse, and with 13km of just nature and scenery before you, you're guaranteed pure serenity during this four-and-a-half-hour-long hike. We'll follow the Caldeirão Verde levada through a green paradise with laurel trees providing cool shade and the sun peeping through the treetops.

Villages will appear dotted below in the lush green valleys and from here you'll catch your first glimpse of the Caldeirão Verde waterfall. You'll walk through a series of tunnels and soon arrive at the majestic waterfall where you'll be able to rest your legs and soak up the atmosphere before heading back to your hotel.

Easy walk in that there are no hills, only about 14 steps up and down. You do however need to pay attention as the paths are very un even with roots and quite narrow and wet in places. Overall a lovely walk plenty of shade from the hot sun. My only criticism is the guide walked back at a fair pace which we couldn't keep up with. Unessassary as when we reached the end we were told we had 25 minutes before the bus left

The walk is beautiful but while stating a certain level of confidence is needed the description did not make it clear that much concentration is needed. It is rocky, full of tree roots, uneven & at times very narrow making passing difficult. This was exacerbated by torrential rain which our good boots & light coats were unable to cope with and we were soaked through by half way. Water also cascaded on to us from the cliffs and our boots were fully submerged. The walk should not have gone ahead.

It’s a different view around every corner! It didn’t feel like the distance at all. The guide was superb and gave us loads of information along the way in an entertaining fashion, especially as we had several different countries present in our little group. I ended up taking so many pictures and video clips. The route was actually quite easy to manage. Very little hills etc as you drive up most of the way to begin the walk.
