Nisyros volcanic isle tour from Kos with boat trip and optional transfers

4.4/5
3725 reviews

If there's one must-visit while you're in Kos, it's the volcanic island of Nisyros. Greek legend says it was created from a stone thrown by the god Poseidon. And it's a scenic gem of an hour-long trip that takes you there. Visit Mandraki, Nikia, and the Stefanos crater - they're all part of the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.

Once you've docked in the harbour of Mandraki, the island's capital, you'll head to the old village of Nikia on the edge of the Stefanos crater. Lose yourself in the labyrinth of cobblestone lanes or find a spot near the crater's edge, where you can feel the heat.

Afterwards, head back to Mandraki. Sugar-cubed houses stretch across this amphitheatre-shaped town, which is in the shadow of a medieval castle and the cliff-side monastery of Panagia Spiliani.

Our guide Manoli was great -- knowledgeable and very entertaining. One improvement in the trip would be to start an hour earlier, at 10 instead of 11. Starting at 11 doesn't give you time to go to the pool or beach first anyway, and returning an hour earlier would be much better.

It was a long but very enjoyable day. There is lots packed in but also plenty of chances to stop and relax. Mandraki is a lovely town and we enjoyed a nice lunch stop there first before heading to the crater and Nikia. The crater does have a strong smell and the walk is a bit steep but it was manageable for us. Manolo our guide was absolutely fantastic and really made the day! Highly recommend doing this trip.

Bus transfer was bit chaotic , once on the island the guide was excellent ( matios ) we felt we should have had longer in the village for lunch as it was nearer the time for lunch rather than 4 o clock on the other stop overall a good day out.
