Ithaca island tour with traditional villages and Kathara Monastery

4.6/5
560 reviews

Famed since ancient times as the home of Odysseus, the island of Ithaca lies off the northeast coast of Kefalonia. It may be just a short boat trip away but to visit is like stepping back in time. Its rugged and mountainous terrain seems straight out of an ancient classic. Dmitri, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The legend of Odysseus on the island of Ithaca is a classic tale of adventure, heroism and perseverance in the face of adversity. It's been told and retold throughout the centuries and remains a beloved part of ancient Greek mythology to this day.'

You'll hear many mythical tales as you visit Ithaca. Explore the capital, Vathi, with its fabulous setting and horseshoe harbour under the island's highest mountain – Nirito. Wind your way up the twists and turns of the mountain roads to reach the Kathara Monastery, located at the island's highest point. The views open up to scenes of endless coastline and hills, giving you a striking perspective of the Ionian landscape. The monastery itself is simple and unfussy, the view from here is the real star.

Next, you'll visit Kioni. The main village is built like an amphitheatre on the slopes of the hillside above, flower-bedecked houses overlooking the port below. You'll then head to the even tinier village of Frikes – not much more than a cluster of tavernas at the waterside – where you'll have free time for lunch. And there's a stop in the inland hill village of Stavros with its leafy main square, church and the Stavros Archaeological Museum. Finally, you'll travel back along the scenic coastal roads to Pisaetos Port to sail back to Kefalonia.

Excellent knowledgeable guide. Superb driving skills of Kostas. Ithaca is a truly beautiful island. Nothing to dislike. It was a very enjoyable day. We did a lot but it did not seem in anyway rushed. I would thoroughly recommend this trip.

Easy way to visit the island. Extremely prompt and timings were 100%. A lot of time on the coach, but necessary to see parts of the beautiful island.

The Ithaca tour does offer stunning scenery and locations but travelling around in a full sized coach can be quite treacherous. Honestly the driver was amazing his he managed to drive that bus around narrow roads is down to sheer skill. However if I’d known how dangerous it is to scale the treacherous roads up to the monastery I be have booked the trip. These roads are not meant for full size coaches and putting over 69 passengers on one is a risk.

The island itself was lovely as were all the village stops although they were all very similar. The trip definitely needed a swim stop. The biggest problem was the coach was too big, it was an unnecessary risk

Thoroughly enjoyed every aspect. The driver was excellent. He was smooth and competent. A genuine credit to the company. Our guide was called Diamond, who was also a knowledgeable lady. This particular trip was a pleasure.
