Ithaca island tour with traditional villages and Kathara Monastery

4.6/5
569 reviews

Famed since ancient times as the home of Odysseus, the island of Ithaca lies off the northeast coast of Kefalonia. It may be just a short boat trip away but to visit is like stepping back in time. Its rugged and mountainous terrain seems straight out of an ancient classic. Dmitri, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The legend of Odysseus on the island of Ithaca is a classic tale of adventure, heroism and perseverance in the face of adversity. It's been told and retold throughout the centuries and remains a beloved part of ancient Greek mythology to this day.'

You'll hear many mythical tales as you visit Ithaca. Explore the capital, Vathi, with its fabulous setting and horseshoe harbour under the island's highest mountain – Nirito. Wind your way up the twists and turns of the mountain roads to reach the Kathara Monastery, located at the island's highest point. The views open up to scenes of endless coastline and hills, giving you a striking perspective of the Ionian landscape. The monastery itself is simple and unfussy, the view from here is the real star.

Next, you'll visit Kioni. The main village is built like an amphitheatre on the slopes of the hillside above, flower-bedecked houses overlooking the port below. You'll then head to the even tinier village of Frikes – not much more than a cluster of tavernas at the waterside – where you'll have free time for lunch. And there's a stop in the inland hill village of Stavros with its leafy main square, church and the Stavros Archaeological Museum. Finally, you'll travel back along the scenic coastal roads to Pisaetos Port to sail back to Kefalonia.

Very long day, if you come from Lixouri around 14 hours, but abulous tour. Memi our guide was amazing and Dimitri our driver navigated the roads lkke a superhero. Stavros was a bit of a damp squib with everything closed for siasta. Lunch was a lovely setting and great food but expensive

Our guide Diamond and our driver Kostas were both wonderful. We heard such great stories about Greek myths from Diamond, not to mention a bit of celebrity gossip when we saw where the super yachts visit! Kostas' driving on the narrow mountain roads was impressive. The monastery had amazing views, and all of the stops offered something unique. Loved it.

The trip was well organised and ran to time. The guide (Diamond) was very knowledgeable about the island and of Greek mythology. The taverna where we stopped for lunch was very good. Overall, an excellent trip
