About the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

The Museum of Modern Art – MoMA for short – is one of New York’s top museums and a must for all lovers of modern art. MoMA’s collection is mainly focused on art from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It holds nearly 200,000 paintings, photographs, illustrations, sculptures, design objects, books and films, many of which are displayed on the museum’s five floors.

MoMA was founded in 1929 as a stand against the predominant traditional and classical fine arts. This makes the museum one of the oldest and most important centres for modern art in the world. It has changed locations several times but has been in its current building since 1939. Monet's Water Lilies, Mondrian’s Broadway Boogie-Woogie, Van Gogh’s Starry Night, Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon and Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Cans are just a few of the thousands of masterpieces on display.

Like many museums, MoMA also has catering establishments, but where you might go for a quick lunch in other museums, eating at The Modern is a true culinary experience. This restaurant has been praised with multiple awards and two Michelin stars.

What can you see at MoMA?

MoMA is New York’s place for modern art. With works by Vincent van Gogh, Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock and Cindy Sherman, you’ll be dazzled by its collection. We recommend starting on the fifth floor and working your way down. On floor five, you’ll find works of art from the period 1880 - 1940, including Starry Night by Van Gogh, works by Gauguin and Cézanne, Les Demoiselles d’Avignon and much more by Picasso, as well as Dance (I) by Matisse.

The Collection 1940 – 1970 on the fourth floor, displays paintings, illustrations, photography and design pieces by world-famous and local artists. Abstract works by Pollock and Rothko as well as Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup Cans can be seen here. And, finally, on the second floor, you’ll find art from the 70s to the present day, with special design pieces and audiovisual works.

What ticket options are there for MoMA?

For fast-track entry, book skip-the-line tickets to MoMA to dive straight into the art collection. These tickets also come with an audio guide in nine languages to help you learn more about the artworks. At the museum, there are also professional guides and art historians who conduct tours for an even more detailed experience. With a New York city pass or combo ticket, you can save money and time at your favorite attractions and get the most out of your visit to the city.

How long does a visit to MoMA take?

While it’s impossible to see all of MoMA’s artworks in one visit, you can see the museum’s most important works within two to three hours. If you don't have a lot of time, but still really want to visit MoMA, allow an hour – and book your tickets in advance. Within an hour, you can have seen masterpieces by Monet, Van Gogh, Mondrian and Warhol. And if you come with small children, we understand that you may not be able to stay very long, but still make time for the Family Art Lab where you can play, experiment and create.

What's the best time to visit MoMA?

The Museum of Modern Art opens daily from 10:30 to 17:30 – until 19:00 on Saturdays – and can get quite busy during the morning hours until 13.00. So, if you’ve the chance to plan and want to view the artworks at a relatively quieter time, we recommend coming later in the afternoon. From 15:00 to closing time, it’s a bit quieter than in the mornings.
