Ancient Ephesus guided tour with House of the Virgin Mary

4.5/5
104 reviews

The hills around Kuşadası are home to two of Turkey's most popular historical sites – the ancient city of Ephesus and the House of the Virgin Mary. You'll be whisked through centuries of history at Ephesus, see one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and visit an important pilgrimage site on Mount Koressos – all in one afternoon. Esra, one of our expert local guides, says, "The Library of Celsus is one of the most impressive landmarks of Ephesus. It once held over 12,000 scrolls and was the third-largest library in the ancient world."

Kick off with a drive into the sun-soaked hills to visit the House of the Virgin Mary. According to popular belief, St John the Evangelist brought Mary to Ephesus after the crucifixion of Jesus, and she lived here until her death. Next, it's time to head to the ancient city of Ephesus, where a journey through history awaits. Your guide will lead you around the sprawling archaeological site and point out its highlights while regaling you with fascinating historic tales of this once-powerful city. While you're here, you'll also walk through the museum, where digital exhibits help to bring the place to life by showcasing what Ephesus could've looked like in its heyday.

You'll stroll down marble-paved streets where mosaics and frescoes still decorate the walls of ancient Roman houses, gaze at the Temples of Artemis and Hadrian, and be blown away by the Library of Celsus. Esra says "I love to imagine the Great Theatre filled with 25,000 spectators. They would come to watch gladiator clashes, political rallies and performances in this theatre, a hub of city life. You can almost hear the roar of the crowd."

Amazing trip, we were picked up in a mini bus and then met the main coach directly - much better than doing lots of pick-up at various hotels. Are guide was friendly and informative - and spoke very good English. We loved both the Virgin Mary's house and Ephesus. We set-off at 1.30 and arrived back at our hotel just before 8pm - so more like a full day tour than a half day! Exhausting but really good!

The entire tour was so informative. It’s worth the cost of the price for the tour. So organised and EZRA was so knowledgeable and witty as she discussed about history of the places we’ve been.

The transfer from the Angora Beach to the Tui Blue Ephesus was a bit hairy to say the least but we survived. The actual tours were very illuminating and the English speaking guide, the wonderful Esra, was brilliant and knew her stuff. Overall, this trip is highly recommended. My only gripe was that when I booked it before travelling the Tui website said it was on Tuesdays but when I saw the rep in resort she said it was Monday or Thursday which was confusing . However, it was easily sorted.

The chapel was a bit of waste unless you are religious..a few of our group were and really appreciated the site. Ephesus itself was amazing. Ezra our guide was so informative and really knew her stuff...she made the trip. It was so interesting. Its a long slow walk through history. The library was stunning and the original marble path and mosaics were beautiful. It would be a trip to do in the morning in summer..I can imagine it would be so hot in the summer as theres no shade.

Our guide Esra was exceptional. Her knowledge and willingness to to share and answer questions was a delightful experience. We thoroughly enjoyed the half day trip. However, If this was made into a full day trip, there would be an opportunity to visit the houses, even at extra cost, that are under excavation. Also, a visit to the museum in Selcuk could be factored in, that would complete the Ephesus experience. I would totally recommend Ersa as a guide.
