Tour of Pamukkale and Hierapolis with a local guide

4.2/5
6 reviews

One of Mother Nature's more unusual masterpieces, UNESCO-listed Pamukkale is a spectacle of white, water-filled terraced basins that has evolved over thousands of years. This full day excursion to Pamukkale from Fethiye includes breakfast and lunch as well as a visit to an onyx workshop. Muzaffer, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘Pamukkale is like something out of a fairytale – a spectacle of terraces formed over thousands of years that look like a cascading snowy waterfall. The mineral content in the hot thermal spring water is said to have healing properties.'

It all begins with a journey through the ever-changing Turkish countryside. Stop for breakfast en-route and you'll be fuelled up to explore Pamukkale. Translating as ‘Cotton Castle', it offers an otherworldly landscape of cascading terraced pools. Wallow in these inviting geothermal salt pools, whose waters are said to be beneficial for everything from your eyesight to rheumatism and asthma. Geologists have calculated that less than 50 grams of minerals are deposited daily, so you can imagine how many millennia it has taken to create the billowing formations you see today.

Then, make the short climb up the hill to the remains of the ancient city of Hierapolis – which was a hugely famous spa city in classical Phrygia, and which remains very well-preserved today. Enjoy a traditional lunch before rounding off the day visiting a local workshop dedicated to onyx gemstones, where you can watch artisans demonstrating their craft.

Being made to go into the onyx factory. Waste of time. Also in the past when we were taken to places like that, at least the staff would give a bit of information about the mineral, how it is sourced, how it is polished, some interesting information, etc. This one was literally just being taken to the factory, with someone telling us about the shop and giving us ‘discount vouchers’, then being herded through the shop where the staff would constantly be on you trying to get you to buy something.

The experience took 14 hours altogether was long day so not so suitable for kids and elderly for us it was wonderful day. Guide didn't think breakfast was good enoug but it was really. Plenty of fresh tomatoes and cucumber and fruit as well as cheese and meet. We thought it was just perfect and there was plenty of everything as well as very good coffee. So called 5 star lunch was not very good at all except the sweet. Thank you tui for the excellent day !

The trip was very well organised and very enjoyable. Could have done with another hour or so at Pamukkale to see everything properly and not have to rush. The guide was lovely though her English wasn’t the best so she was sometimes quite difficult to understand. The breakfast wasn’t the best and let the trip down a bit but the beautiful lunch made up for it! All in all, a good day out!

The trip felt a little rushed which is partially understandable given the 6 hrs total travelling time but an extra hour in Pamukkale would have been good. The visit to the Onyx Factory should be dropped as it seems like a bit of a scam overpriced tourist trap then extra time could have been given to explore Pumukkale. Breakfast was very basic and supplied at an unidentified bar and lunch was buffet style at a hotel nearby to Pamukkale.

A good day Lots to of really interesting things to see. Be prepared for a long day though it’s a long coach journey. Trip to onyx factory on return trip could be omitted. Only downside was the breakfast stop which was in a down at heel roadside stop. The lunch stop in a hotel was excellent .

Definitely worth the trip to see them. More time at the site would have been better. Only chance for a quick look at the ruins, visit to the travertines and a dip in the pool. Given the long travel time it was rushed. The guide was very good, she explained everything carefully, gave lots of tips.
