This two-day Sahara adventure from Tunis, Hammamet or Sousse blends ancient history, desert landscapes and authentic Berber culture as you travel deep into southern Tunisia. From Roman amphitheatres and underground villages to sweeping salt lakes and golden dunes, you’ll experience some of the country’s most iconic sights before spending a night under the stars in a traditional Bedouin camp.
Day one begins with a pick-up from your accommodation in an air-conditioned vehicle as you head to El Jem, home to one of the world’s largest and best-preserved Roman amphitheatres and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From here, the journey continues south to Matmata, a unique Berber village where homes are carved directly into the earth. You’ll visit the famous Sidi Idriss Hotel, a Star Wars filming location, before meeting a local Berber family in their cave home and sharing traditional tea with olive oil or honey. After lunch at a local restaurant, continue to Douz for a short stop in the desert gateway town before reaching Sabria, a remote Bedouin village surrounded by sand. Here, you’ll check into your desert camp and have the option to ride camels at sunset as the Sahara glows in soft evening light. As night falls, you’ll learn how traditional sand bread is prepared, baked under hot sand and embers, before enjoying dinner, music and storytelling around the campfire. Sleeping in a Bedouin tent beneath a sky full of stars completes the experience.
Wake early on day two to watch the sunrise over the dunes before breakfast in the peaceful desert surroundings. Then cross Chott Djerid, North Africa’s largest salt lake, with time for a photo stop as shimmering mirages stretch across the horizon. Continue to Chebika, a mountain oasis where you’ll hike through palm groves, ochre cliffs and a small waterfall hidden in the canyon. After lunch at a local restaurant along the way, you'll continue to Kairouan, home to the Great Mosque and one of the most important Islamic heritage sites in North Africa, before returning to your original drop-off point with unforgettable desert memories.
