Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park and spice plantation tour

4.4/5
11 reviews

Excite your senses with this Zanzibar day trip. Look for the rare, red colobus monkey in the jungles of Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, then tour a spice plantation and see how exotic crops like vanilla, pepper and cardamom are grown, tasting as you go. You'll also see how glass bottles are recycled at Chako workshop. Kheri, one of our local guides, says, ‘Our Spice plantations are community-based smallholdings where various spices are grown together in one area. These little plantations demonstrate centuries of farming know-how inherited from our forefathers, and they're the reason that Zanzibar is dubbed Spice Island.'

Kick off at Jozani Chwaka National Park, home to endangered red colobus monkeys, bush babies, duikers, butterflies and birds. Keep your eye trained on the treetops, and you'll be in with a chance of spotting these elusive creatures as you make tracks through the park with a ranger to help explain what you see.

Next up is the Chako upcycling centre, where artisan tableware and lamps are created from waste bottles. The project promotes sustainability as well as social and economic empowerment. After this, we'll make our way to the spice plantation for a lunch prepared with the spices that grow here. You'll see all sorts of spices – think vanilla, pepper and cardamom – growing here, and get to try some straight from the tree. You'll also find out how spices are used in local dishes and which plants have medicinal properties.

Great trip, saw several different species in the forest, walked through mangroves. Then had an extra thrown in- a visit to a recycling centre which Tui supports. Would have been nice to have known this at time of booking- I may have chosen a different trip. It felt a bit set up and expected you to purchase something that when you got home you’d throw away again! However toilets were spotless. Lunch after that at spice farm but it was late to eat. Spice visit very good. A long day but enjoyable.

Was a very good tour although the spice farm at the end was to long a walk.

Our guide Ottoman was excellent, engaging and informative. Loved the walk through the Jozani Forest, we saw Blue monkeys, Dik dik's in an enclosure, Red Colobus monkeys and an elephant shrew. Did not appreciate the long drive to the recycling centre and then having to walk round there before lunch- very interesting but so hungry. Finally some food which was OK. The spice tour was very interesting, learnt lots. The ladies toilets at the Spice Plantation were awful ??

Good trip Although the Jozani forest aspect was shorter than expected and the rep from fisherman tours did the guiding all day so no other guides involved. The monkeys were located main on the road side rather than in the forest. Loved the chako recycling plant and bought some lovely gifts. The spice tour was too long and the food was dodgy. Both had upset stomach the next day. Tour is all day. The down side is the travelling and pick ups
