Pico do Arieiro sunrise tour with local breakfast

4.5/5
279 reviews

Watching the sunrise from the top of one of Madeira's highest peaks will have you reaching for your camera over and over again. And this exclusive morning trip to Pico do Arieiro promises just that – views over Madeira during the mystical first light of the day, followed by a warming breakfast. Arlindo, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘You may wonder why we plan to drive to the peak a while before the sun is due to rise. You'll see when you get there that the best colours light up the sky during the half-hour before the sun appears.'

You'll want to pack warm layers, a hat, gloves and scarf for this morning tour, as the temperature can often be up to 10 degrees lower at the top of Pico do Arieiro than at the coast. We'll set off early, with a pre-dawn pick-up from your hotel – this is to ensure you can reach the top in time to find a good viewpoint for the chance to watch the sun bathe the island of Madeira in golden light. Often, clouds sit below the Pico do Arieiro, making the sunrise views even more magical.

Coffee will be served as you're taking it all in and enjoying the moment in the midst of mountains and clouds. Afterwards, you'll head along to a restaurant for a tasty breakfast. Arlindo adds, ‘It can get very cold on the Pico do Arieiro, sometimes it even snows there. My parents used to drive us up here if there was snow at the peak. The local tradition was to build a snowman on the bonnet of the car before driving back down again.'

The driver / guide was excellent, punctual, safe driver, very knowledgeable. The views of the sunrise were as impressive as described in the experience information, the breakfast stop off was good. The driver stopped at a couple of view points on the return journey which added to the experience. Less good was not in TUIs control (unless you feedback to the local tourist info), some people at the site were using drones which took away from the experience as the drones were noisy & in the way.

Great staff and excellent transport with only six people in the vehicle. Unfortunately, the whole experience felt rushed. We were given a black coffee from a flask in the dark, surrounded by hundreds of other tourists, then had to leave before the sunrise had even finished. The breakfast wasn’t worth the stop—if your hotel includes breakfast, eat there instead. More time at Pico do Arieiro and no breakfast stop would make this tour much better.

Our guard was informative about the wildlife around the area. I would have liked to have added on the walk to the ‘stairway to heaven’ so that the experience felt like a walk typical of Madeira.

Nunu was an excellent guide and very proud of his island. Really liked his chat on the way back regarding the history and the plants of Madeira. . Pick up on time. Explained activity. Took us to a brilliant viewpoint. Breakfast was fantastic with a variety of options. Take plenty of warm clothes!! Really recommend this trip.

The guide Nunu was very informative and attentive. The sunrise was spectacular. Coffee and blankets were a bonus. The breakfast was very good and plentiful with hot and cold offerings. Be aware it gets cold and can be tricky under foot at the peak!
