Mauritius Black River Gorges hike

3.4/5
3 reviews

Discover the splendid, pure, and wild nature of Black River Gorges National Park, a 67.54 km² expanse of untouched wilderness located in the southwest of Mauritius. Known as the “lungs of Mauritius,” the park aims to protect and raise awareness of the island’s unique natural heritage and is home to some of the last remaining endemic forests, covering around 3.5% of Mauritius’ total surface area.

Accompanied by an expert guide, guests will explore the hidden wonders of this world-unique eco-system while enjoying breathtaking panoramic views and changing micro-climates along the way. During the hike, discover several viewpoints overlooking different parts of the park and its surroundings. Halfway through the adventure, guests will also encounter the “Mare aux Joncs Gorge,” also known as the “Bats Valley,” where thousands of Mauritian Fruit Bats can often be observed.

The park is home to rare endemic flora and fauna including the Echo Parakeet, the Mauritian Kestrel, the Pink Pigeon, and endemic trees such as the black ebony. Along the trail, enjoy the peaceful sounds of nature and immerse yourself in the incredible biodiversity of Mauritius.

This trip can best be described as a "rip-off". It was advertised as a full day trek and we paid over £90 per person. We were picked up at 9am and back at our hotel by 2.30pm. Due to her car breaking down our guide arrived late at the park and so we were actually walking for only about three hours. As it was raining we weren't allowed to come off the main track for safety reasons. Tui really should make it clear that the trek could be affected due to adverse weather. Guide was lovely though.
