Stromboli night tour

4.2/5
167 reviews

Life on Stromboli is dominated by the active volcano that gives the island its name. Cruise over from Tropea and you'll spend the afternoon exploring the village of San Vincenzo before trying to catch the ‘Sciara del fuoco' explosions against the night sky.

After sailing into the Tyrrhenian Sea, Stromboli will rise up before you in the early afternoon light. Dock at San Vincenzo and you'll have free time to explore its collection of whitewashed houses on a slope dominated by St Vincent's church. The church boasts great views of the jagged sea stack of Strombolicchio, with its white lighthouse.

As evening sets in, board your boat and circumnavigate Stromboli. With luck, you'll witness the natural extravaganza that is the Sciara del fuoco – ‘Stream of fire' – that lights up the Stromboli night.

The boat journey was horrendous. I have never experienced travel sickness on a boat before, not even a small speedboat but this experience was the worst. The waters were probably choppy but the speed the boat was driving at was ridiculous - a boat of that size with over 100 people should not be bouncing off the water surface. It was almost impossible to go to the toilets as I was flung left to right. Several people were being sick throughout the journey and it ruined the excursion completely.

Overall the experience was very good. The sea was rough which cannot be helped. It was a very long day so have to be prepared for this. Would have liked a guided tour once arrived on the island. Very enjoyable day.

Maybe I didn't ask enough questions before purchase but I expected a fully guided tour, with a Guide on the bus to Tropea to tell us about the region during the bus journey. I was shocked by how fast the boat drove to Stromboli in heavy waves. At first was fun but everyone started getting sick. My wife was ill and crying. We were expecting a relaxing cruise not a ride on the Seasick Express. Stromboli was nice but my wife was too ill to sightsee or eat. Ride back was better.

This trip to Stromboli was amazing. Beautiful island and of course awe inspiring to see the eruption. However, this was to be our 'special treat' for our Wedding Anniversary and my husbands 70th birthday. We arrived at the boat and there were no seats together so had to sit apart. On the return journey it was a bit scary getting onto the boat with everyone pushing to get on and get a sest. Also thete was no guide all day

Visiting the volcanic island of Stromboli was one of the highlights of my holiday in Calabria. The island has spectacular views out to the sea and there are many small shops and restaurants where you can find local products. It was incredible to hear and see the volcano letting out little puffs of smoke and ash and we also got to witness small lava eruptions after sunset. The boat trip to the island was quite long but it was worth it!

For starters it’s not a TUI trip, all TUI do is organise a bus from the hotel to the marina, no guides, just transport. Basically you could make your own way to the marina and save money. If you are not bothered about having the chance to see an eruption you can get to Stromboli via other boat companies faster and cheaper .
