Self-guided audio walk at the mystical Hill of Tara

Discover the Hill of Tara, one of Ireland's most important archaeological and cultural sites, on this self-guided audio walk. Guided by Derek Spillane, a Fáilte Ireland‑approved expert in history and heritage, it combines academic insight with accessible storytelling as you explore the landscape at your own pace.

As you walk across the hill, you'll follow a route through thousands of years of history, from early farming communities in the Boyne Valley to the arrival of Christianity. The tour brings together archaeology, mythology and Celtic spirituality, helping you understand how the site was used as both a ceremonial centre and a place of belief.

Along the way, you'll encounter key features of the site, including a Neolithic passage tomb, ancient burial mounds and later church remains. You'll also explore traditions associated with Irish kingship, as well as local folk practices that continue today, such as fairy tree customs and ritual offerings.

The experience also highlights important stories linked to the site, including Saint Patrick's challenge to the druids and later gatherings that shaped Irish identity.

The tour is fully self-guided, using GPS to guide you along the route with offline audio that allows you to explore at your own pace. And if you'd like to take part in a living Irish tradition, Derek suggests bringing a piece of degradable cloth.
