Kourion Ruins, Kolossi Castle and winery visit from Paphos

4.5/5
835 reviews

The myths of Cyprus come to life on this tour. You'll see where a legend was born, visit the ruins of Kourion, venture to the village of Omodos and cap off the day with a tasting at a family-run winery. Eva, one of our local guides, says of this excursion, ‘You'll wander through layers of history, culture and mythology, and learn about Aphrodite, the goddess of love. The rituals connected with her as well as the plants and seashells associated with her.'

You'll dive straight into the past to see Petra tou Romiou, a sea stack where, local legend has it, the goddess Aphrodite was born. The ancient past takes on a more tangible form at Kourion, one of the most impressive archaeological sites in Cyprus. Visit its Roman baths and amble into its centrepiece, the Greco-Roman theatre. It's still used for concerts. And up next is the Crusader-built Kolossi Castle, which belonged to the Knights Templar from the 14th century.

Lunch is in a family-owned restaurant. It's as famed for its country fare made from locally sourced ingredients as it is for its scenic location in the hills. Then, we'll head to the mountain-nestled village of Omodos, where you'll have free time to wander around skinny cobbled streets lined with Byzantine buildings. And to round off the day, we'll visit the winery. Here, you'll sample some of its award-winning wines, including the commandaria variety, which Richard the Lionheart baptised as the ‘wine of kings and the king of wines'.

The tour was an extremely long day due to lots of pick ups from various hotels. The visit itself felt quite rushed, due to the amount of time collecting guests. We also had 2 very young children on the coach, one of them was fine but one cried most of the day, quite frustrating when you are trying to listen to the guide. I would recommend that it is advertised as not suitable for children, although I would have thought the winery visit would put parents with children off! The guide Liza was Fab

Tour covered a lot in one day, and with lunch and wine tasting represented excellent value for money. It is a tour that is best for adults as there is a lot of time travelling, the stops were timed perfectly so we neither felt rushed or sat around. Would like to call out Chloe Mills and Emmy Dyson who work for TUI and were trying the tour for education. Real ambassadors for the company and such good fun.

Enjoyable experience. The tour guide, Lisa really knew her stuff. Winery was the best part of the outing. Wouldn"t say its great value for the money overall. But we enjoyed the dayout. 8/10

Our guide was very good, entertaining, knowledgeable and interesting. Content of tour was good. Lunch was good traditional food. The vineyard / wine tasting bit was great and owner was very entertaining, Sadly we had some heavy rain in the mountains so village visit was a bit damp but overall would highly recommend this trip to see some of the local sights.

An excellent tour with a balance and variety of activities. historical, cultural aspects as well as beautiful scenery. Our guide Adrianna was lovely and very knowledgeable our driver was skilled in negotiating the narrow streets and roads. The lunch was excellent .. the dishes all home made and traditional with a warm welcome. The winery visit and tasting was excellent as well as time to do some shopping. A really excellent tour
