The Caldera Taburiente trail is a journey through the island's only national park – and it's the star of La Palma's popular hiking scene. You'll walk 16 kilometres along the snake-like trails – down 800 metres of negative elevation – into a volcano crater basin, gaze out over incredible scenery and visit La Cascade de Colores – a waterfall where iron-rich waters create a rainbow effect in the rock.

1. I completed the hike, though it was not easy. You really need to score, - let's say, out of 10, - how easy / difficult the hike is. This one was not an easy one. The scoring helps people to review their abilities adequately. 2. The description must be accurate - it was not. The major difficulty was not the distance but the mountainous terrain + walking over the stony river bed with crossing the river multiple times and climbing over the boulders for the last leg of the hike. Run out of space

The route is spectacular but long …more demanding than you might think (the 16km route registered as 23km on my Garmin). Guide was fantastic. No one was rushed, loads of rests. There was 200m of climbing and over 1000m of decent so you really need a good pair of shoes/boots, 2l of water and perhaps a pair of walking poles.

I like a real hike. This was too easy for athletes, who are better to walk to the lighthouse if in sunny far south La Palma or towards beaches or forests if elsewhere on the semi sunny if not whole week sunny north/east/west. Seismologists will however need to take a guided walk such as this to understand the world region’s risks and actions best taken.

We needed more information beforehand about the length and severity of the walk. We found that if we had booked direct we would have known what to expect. However once we were picked up we were well looked after and the walk was a wonderful experience and also very good value for money.

Full day out with great guide (Femke). Frequent stops. Courteous drivers. Bring a packed lunch and plenty of water. We were lucky with the weather.
