Mount Vesuvius crater tour with authentic lunch at a vineyard

4.5/5
242 reviews

Sometimes nature provides us with a perfect pairing – and this tour is just that. Combine a climb up to the crater of Mount Vesuvius with lunch and a tasting at a vineyard. It'll bring you closer to the awesome intensity of mainland Europe's only active volcano and feed you with life borne out of its volcanic soil. Mattia, one of our expert local guides, says, ‘The vineyard sits on the slopes of Vesuvius, and produces Lacryma Cristi grapes, which means “tears of Christ”. This is down to a legend that God was crying about Lucifer stealing a corner of heaven, and where his divine tears fell, the vines of Lacryma Cristi thrived.'

First, you'll travel by bus up the flanks of Vesuvius to 1,000 metres altitude. The volcano looms large over the Gulf of Naples, and it was a huge eruption here that buried Pompeii in AD79. Volcanic soils are extremely fertile, explaining why the area around the volcano has been populated for millennia. Once you leave the bus, you'll finish the journey to the crater on foot. With top-drawer views over the bay from the top, you'll want to take your camera for this one.

After your trip to the crater, we'll discover all there is to know about Lacryma Cristi wine, grown on the slopes of the volcano. You'll tour the winery and learn how the unique soil and climate create ideal growing conditions, resulting in wines that reflect the terroir. We'll also enjoy a light lunch of freshly prepared dishes made with the vineyard's own produce, accompanied by their finest black label wines.

The tour was very interesting and the guide seemed very knowledgeable and helpful. We enjoyed seeing the crater of Vesuvius and really appreciated the opportunity to enjoy fantastic food and wine from the area chatting to fellow guests in a relaxed atmosphere. A special thank you to our guide. We got stuck in a long traffic jam and he jumped off the bus to buy us all biscuits from a street vendor and got water for those who had run out. A great day.

The guide was excellent. Knowledgeable and shared facts not only about Mount Vesuvius but also about the history and culture of Naples. The climb is not for the faint hearted in the heat, but lots of water and pit stops made it achievable. Lunch at the vineyard was outstanding with lots of socialising and opportunity to enjoy local wines. Downside: no pick up/drop off from our hotel. We had to walk 20 mins each way before and after the trip.

The whole day was amazing and difficult to put into words exhilarating! Exciting! Exhausting!! All of those and more. The tour guide was brilliant and quickly made adjustments to cope with a marathon which was being held during our walking ascent. So an extra bonus spectacle for us. Lunch and vineyard was great too

The advice given was very good. The walk from the coach to the view point was difficult for me because of the distance and elevation of the trail. I have arthritis of the knees, so was aware it might be a problem. Otherwise, I fully enjoyed the rest of the experience.

The experience was exceptional, a very enjoyable day. The journey to Versuvius was broken by a short stop at a small shop where we tasted various lemonchellos and chocolate, a lovely little treat before our climb up Versuvius. The views were spectacular making the climb well worth the effort. We then visited a lovely vineyard, the lunch was excellent as were the wines we tasted. I would have liked a little more time to savour each wine, but still very enjoyable. Lillian was an excellent guide.
